Woods cues

Hi, My first visit.....In the new year i intend to order a custom cue from J Parrris, before i spend loads of £££££ I was curious about trying a 60" cue, I found a cheap second hand "Woods" cue (60") the extra length seems OK, has anyone here ever examined a woods cue ? are they really Solid ebony ? the splicing at the shaft looks very clean cut almost like a cheap paint job, before i remove the name plate and look have you any opinions ?

As far as I know, some of the cheaper models are a composite type material and a various woods and the more expensive cues are all wood.

Thanks, The "ebony" certainly looks strange, I looked at there web site and they claim it's real ebony so i removed the name disc and found brown wood, I might take a photo and send it to them.

Ebony isn't always black, if anything the black stuff is pretty rare compared to the brownish stuff.

If you buy cheap you cannot expect to get black ebony, just isn't possible !

Probably rosewood if from the cheaper end of the range.

The cues are generally solid and good value for the price paid, nobodys getting real ebony cues with a top splice of exotic wood for £50 ish brand new. The 3 star cues are solid woods.

Tis true! Ebony is generally graded on "how black".

Personally I like it with some colour in it but it's all a personal choice.

I saw one of their custom cues. Not the 3 star variety. Was some of the best looking ash grain I ever did see. Splice work spot on and cue played solid. Guy paid 200 quid for cue alone. 12 splices of exotic wood. For that money cannot be beat.

Dave I bought a early woods Ronnie replica 1pce from them it's unbadged and it is very good cue for the money it was about £58 and it's looks like ebony but it's a stained rosewood with black lacquer that hides brown wood, have played a few frames it and it's nice I could switch from my burwat champion, balance is very good it's forward weighted and ash shaft has even arrows down the shaft, the only bad feel with it is the lacquer on the ash if this was striped off and oiled the you would have a great value cue.
I picked up a mates JP ultimate last week which cost £1200 and its not as well balanced the cue lifts from bridge easily which the the woods cue doesn't the ultimate and its over 2oz heavier and both are 9mm, you might want too ask woods for a quote on their custom cues, £150-200 should get you a better shaft & real ebony, think it's a couple of months wait but it might be worth it, to be honest if I had invested in £1200 in that ultimate with the waiting time I would have been very disappointed, my mate likes it so that's all that matters

Thanks for all the replies, I have given the 60" Woods cue a fair trial and the size is OK I'll get xmas out of the way and arrange a chat and view of a Parris cue, If i thought the woods cue would stay straight i wouldn't bother with a new parris cue, but I know without the lacquer it will twist.

Not their custom cues mate. You get what you pay for and the custom cue I saw was as good as any I saw. Two years old and pin straight.

Lots of cues makers will beat them on price and get a great cure for your money....
