  • Why after four years can I not run more then eight.

Hi guys I am back with my ugly game...LOL
My Safety game is really good and my positional play is above average but I can't pot two balls in a row. My last two tournaments my high break has been eight. Make a good Red with perfect shape then miss leaving great shape for my opponent for what should be my next Red. The frustrating part is I can run balls at home.

As you know practise and match play are two entirely different animals, you started playing the game very late and take long breaks due to work or weather so realistically you have no right to perform at the level you would like to, just lower your expectation level and enjoy playing the game again and you will relax a little and more than likely will play better
It's hard to pot balls with a Chimpanzee tea party going on in your head

Look at the Cue ball instead. Less practice...better results!

He already does that (much to my dissatisfaction)

Because you don't play much snooker.

As Geordie says, you have long breaks, don't put much time into snooker, and it's a ridiculously difficult game, so you can't expect to be making 40s & 50s if you're not practicing properly, and regularly.

I tried that Terry but went away from it except for shots tight on the cushion or over another ball.

LOL, 16 will do. I ran 40 the other night in a match at our house, 5 blacks like there was nothing to this game. So frustrating. At the last tournament I played a few practice games with a much better player where I ran 4 Blues, 2 Pinks and one Black. Then made 5 balls in my match which included one black. He said there is no reason why I am not winning matches. I have won 2 games this year out of a possible 15.

A couple hours every other day and we have a match night once a week with my Son and another guy that plays in our tournaments.

I decided today to go back to the Real basics. The lineup with just 15 reds. These are basic potting angles as far as I am concerned. After an hour the best I managed was 11 before I missed. I fell apart on most around 6. Not because iof bad position just a bad pot. I am embarrassed to say I have a match table in a beautiful Snooker room in my basement and after four years I cannot even run through a basic 15 red lineup. So frustrating. I know you guys say just have fun well this is not fun.

Don't worry about it. Clearing the line up isn't exactly easy, at least not for most players. Be happy that you cleared 11 as your best effort. From reading your thread it sounds like you've had a few decent breaks in practice recently but you've struggled to convert that in matches. Maybe try to relax and treat matches like a practice match, try not to tense up too much. That's obviously easier said than done though.

Don't get down about your line up efforts today, 11 balls is decent for a player of your standard. Like me you need to practise more, in order to improve. Here's hoping we can both improve, my aim is for a line up ton.

Maybe try walking into the line of the shot slower to make sure your head is staying on line and cue along the baulk line with your eyes closed and don't try and cue straight just let your grip hand do what it wants and if it goes left or right this might be what is happening when you lose concentration/get frustrated with yourself.

Good to go back to basics Les but if you do that you need to throw all your high expectations out the window. After 5 years on tsf you realise yourself the progress is slow. It's a hard game to learn and even harder if you take long breaks without playing. Maybe go back to thelongbomber thread and the tedisbill exercises, there was lots of advice and it might refresh your memory and give you the help you need.

Thanks but I think you misread my post. 15 Reds from Black to Blue spot with no colours on the table. Just simple reds.

Sorry, still, you've had a few decent breaks in practise. Concentrate on the positives, and try and convert that form to matches. I think like me you've been discouraged by poor form sometimes and have taken a break. I think it's better to persist and practise regularly. I'd do the normal line up if I were you, with the colours on their spots. Having had a 50 break in practise then you should be able to run some high line up breaks with consistent practice.

Sounds like you need some help to me Les. No amount of practice will sort your problems if you are consistently doing the wrong things.

Go and see Terry for coaching. It won't be an overnight fix, but you need to listen to his advise and put it all into practice EVERY TIME you play.
