  • Best Value-For-Money Cue Brand?

Afternoon all, been a while since ive posted on here! Hope everyone is well!

Currently I'm using a John Parris Regal Cue, 19.4oz 57" 3/4 with what was originally a 9.5mm tip and over the years of sanding tips etc i believe is around about 8.7mm now according to my callipers. Im after changing my cue totally, and to be honest, as much as i'd love to buy another John Parris cue, i simply don't have the money to go and splash out on one!

Im after an ash cue, approx 18-18.5oz 57.5" 3/4 cue with a 10mm tip and one that has the "real wood" feel to it, ie not a lacquered finish which gets sticky etc... Could anyone recommend a certain brand or place i could go to have a little look at some? I never really looked too much into cues before, as soon as i started playing i decided to go all out and buy myself a Parris cue, and i love it - i just feel that i need a little bit of a change, something to spruce my game up a little bit!

apologies if i have posted this in the wrong thread!

    many thanks!
    Luke

if you like your parris, you could always take it into john parris and get some work done on it. i would rather than then get a new cue anyway. he could always put on a new ferrule

i did think that, i think it would require a bit too much work and therefore end up being crazy expensive... im guessing that if he were to put a new ferrule on and make it to a 10mm he would have to shorten the cue, and to take a little bit of weight out would mean the balance of the cue would be totally different...

but yes, i love my parris and was contemplating maybe buying a new one and then selling this one to try and recoup the money but obviously have to convince the mrs to let me spend 500 odd quid! haha

Parris would charge a fortune for that, cue would need splices added to butt to bring the length back up and would then feel like a totally different cue most likely.

There are a few things you can do...
You could have a new shaft made with a 10mm tip.
Have it extended so that you can have it taken down on the top to 10mm.
If you have a 12" butt, you can have about 5"on the butt at least and there are ways to keep the balance in the same place.
For that one you've always wanted...

Doubt it would feel that much different, both Selby and Ding have had splices added to their cues over the years to bring them back up to length and its not affected them any. There's galleries showing this on the stamford site

it could be a fortune but the first thing to do i would say is call. its better than not knowing or discounting

Roughly £70-130 or thereabouts i reckon.

And to add, plus a lengthy waiting period to get it back, i think Andy Travis could do it much cheaper and faster.

I would agree with the new shaft option. In my opinion that would be the route to go as it would still look like a John Parris Regal cue regardless of which cuemaker you use to make a new shaft.

As JRC stated, John Parris would charge a lot for extending the butt, I always liked the splicing on the Regal and asked JP to add the same splices to a JP classic that I owned at the time, I was quoted around £85 if I remember correctly and that was at least two years ago (thats just for front splices with veneers). Wouldn't like to think of the cost to extend. I would think it would be a similar price (or maybe cheaper) for JP to make a new shaft than extending. It will obviously feel/play different but if you purchase a new cue you are in the same boat, at least this way you still have the same cue and although slightly like Triggers broom, it will still be a JP Regal and it will have a good resale value with a 10mm tip.

If the JP price for a new shaft is too expensive then, as Jono suggested, try Andy Travis.
