  • Question on Chalk

Hello. I am new here, from Singapore! Hence my English not so good. I have some questions and some of you out there can tell me the answer.

    1) Why do we have to chalk the tip?? I have the habit of forgetting to chalk the tip after every hit. Hence I want to know the importance of chalking. Some of my friends say chalking can lower the possibility of a miscue especially when you attempt a screw shot. Is this true?

    2) I see green and blue chalk. Whats the difference between this two?

Chalking the tip allows the tip to better grip the cueball. You are more likely to get miscues with any kind of spin without chalk because instead of the cue pushing through, gripping and controlling the ball, it just knocks it out of the way. Without chalk it's extremely difficult to get any real control.

It isn't strictly necessary to chalk after every stroke, but if you don't then the cueball won't react consistently and you'll find it more difficult to judge spin shots.

I don't know that there is a standard colour code to chalk (red is available too). Some are just coloured for aesthetic purposes and others have slightly different compositions.

Most professionals use the green Triangle chalk, it's very fine and grips nicely. Master chalk is also fairly well respected although it seems to be more popular amongst pool players. Supapro seems to be the brand you find on the mass market, and in my experience it's terrible, it's gritty, it stains the cueball and it causes miscues.

Ultimately it's personal preference but I don't think you'll have any problems with green Triangle, it's fairly cheap too.

Thanks a lot. So chalking is impt to get real cue ball ctrl. I will remember it. Next time will try to chalk. Heehee..

By the way, if i attempt to clear a snooker, point my tip the cushion i want to hit. Can i purposely leave a chalk mark there so that i can remember the spot? I mean when i point my tip to the cushion, i use the tip to touch the cushion. Is that a foul?

Im pretty sure thats a foul. I know for sure that in pool, using chalk to mark a shot is an automatic loss if intentional.

I think is a foul too. However, if its a foul, then how much points deduct? Beside, since its a snooked situation, then will it result in a free ball for the opponent??

I play snooker for 6-7 yrs liao, I encounter this onli once, once my opponent attempt to pot the black into the corner pocket, however, he hit it too hard and the black hit the jaw n bounce out and land roll along the lining between the cushion and the wood. And it throw into the Centre Pocket. Under such situation, is the pot valid? Or is it a foul? Dun think many of u encounter this b4.
