I'm looking at the WSA's wierd list (the one where the N.I. Trophy seems to count towards their rankings.... er, when it's not a ranking event) and it has Hunter at 19, Matty at 11th, then on the www.Snooker.org site, 05-06 rankings sees Hunter at 5 and Stevens 1 better at 4 (seeing as he was in the EWC final it would make sense)

    http://www.snooker.org/Rnk/0506/ranking.asp
    http://www.worldsnooker.com/players_rankings.htm

Do you know what's going on StevensFan? www.WorldSnooker.com has the dragon on 15,262 points while the other site he has 33,712, the www.Snooker.org site also lists what points the players won 2 years ago which makes sense as we know their rankings are based on a 2 year rolling format. (Also.... the WSA doesn't show previous year's final rankings that are consistent with the following years beginning rankings)

So to answer you, they're both higher up than you've seen... doesn't bode well if you can't trust the site where the Governing Body host their information!

One more blunder from the WSA then. That page even disagrees with itself (notice the title says provisional 04/05, but the page says 05/06 rankings).

As spotted, worldsnooker shows what I would call the 06/07 provisional rankings, based only on the 04/05 season, which is probably why Hunter fairs so poorly. The same list can be seen here.

Matt's definately officially world number 4 for the coming season though, I remember him being announced as such during the NI trophy. Interesting looking at those provisionals nonetheless. Ronnie looks much less dominant for 04/05 than he did in 03/04, and it's odd that Stevens has dropped so much provisionally given his EWC performance. I suppose winning the UK in 03/04 set quite a high standard to maintain. McManus did alright for himself in his own quiet way last season too apparantly.

well as there's not been a ranking tournament so far, there'll be no change until there is one and some points have been won; me n Robert are just seeing a lot of inconsistencies with the different websites.

The official site has the correct provisional rankings. The snooker.org site still has the provisional rankings from last season up. But Matthew Stevens is indeed ranked 11th provisionally - but his official rank will be 4th for the whole of the season. The official site's provisional rankings are bang up to date as far as I can tell.

There isn't a proper provisional list yet because no-one's played in a ranking event so far, and the fact that the WSA's list (whether official or not) cannot be correct because we know Matthew Stevens is not 11th in the world. There's no obvious reason why the WSA are showing non-ranking events counting towards their world ranking, but maybe we'll find out.

I've just compared the two sites stats and if you look at the points totals on the WSA, they're the same as snooker.org's sub-total for the previous sesaon..... what we can see therefore is the WSA aren't including the correct information, they should have the results of 03/04 included too, because the rankings (as correctly shown on snooker.org) are based on 2 years worth of achievements.

The only way the WSA is correct could be that the provisional list will be made up of 2 years results; last year and this year but that would mean achiements in the previous year being deleted and the players receiving no recognition for playing well in the 03/04 season; like Stevens.

If Stevens for example was looking at his provisional ranking after the EWC being number 4, won't he now be a little disappointed that he's apparently dropped to outside the top 10.

Still cloudy, but I'm sure someone somewhere will know what's going on.

[edit: this links shows a 'very' provisional list for 2006/07 on snooker.org, and it shows Stevens as #11th!!!! oh god... http://www.snooker.org/rnk/0405/prov...eryProvRanking ]

Not only that but on that link it has Mark Williams as 22nd!! What is Mark Williams current ranking? He was number 2 then he had a very poor season and I know he dropped down but does anyone know where he is now?
Alao, Tony Drago's always been a favourite of mine..... what rank has he dropped to now?

Matthew Stevens is provisionally ranked 11.

Last season he was offically ranked 6th, but his provisional rank was his 03/04 points + his 04/05 points. After the World Championship he was provisionally ranked 4th, and the provisional rankings become official after the World Championship so he officially became the World Number 4. Now once the provisonal rankings become official, you get a new set of provisional rankings comprisng of the 04/05 points + 05/06 points. Since there hasn't been any ranking events so far this season, his provisional rank is done entirely off the 04/05 points meaning he is provisonally ranked 11th.

                  The process is this:

After the WC he was provisionally ranked 4th.
Provisonal ranking became his official ranking, updated from 6th to 4th.
Assigned a new provisional rank of 11th.

Don't blow a fuse TP , we've recognised that worldsnooker shows provisionals, but it does have a few errors. There's the inconsistency with the titles that I mentioned, but also the start rankings that are shown.

Normally, at least as I remember it, start rankings shown on a provisional list are the official rankings at the start of the season (as in with Stevens fourth). The start rankings on there seem to be set based on the 04/05 season only, unless they're based on the 04-06 seasons (in which case they would be repeats of the provisional rankings). It might be intentional, but what's the point of showing an early provisional next to a more developed provisional?

You have to admit also that it seems a bit remiss for the official site not to list the current official rankings (ie, the ones all the players are still seeded by). Surely these are more important than the provisionals, which are all over the place this early on.

reverse side, although it's a bit odd that non-ranking events are listed on the ranking pages, you might have noticed no points have been given for the NI trophy, and I suspect none will be. Probably just there for the sake of completeness.

Anyway, I think Mr Stevens' ranking has been well and truly established from all angles.
