  • Snooker Magazines

I know about 'CueSport' and 'Snooker Scene' in England. I know about 'Billiards Digest' and 'Pool and Billiard Magazine' in the States.

But what other magazines, worldwide, cover snooker?

Cant help sorry I subscribe to snookerscene and cuesport and i have asked before but the retailers tell me those are the only 2 they have. Anyone else finding though that both of the aforementioned are very similar and cover far too much pool and not enough snooker?
im dreaming of...a century:rolleyes: ..But one day...it will come.;)

There used to be a PotBlack magazine but I think it became part of Snookerscene about ten years ago.

I can never find any cue sport magazine in WH Smiths I've tried looking every month, but it's never there.
          Cheers

Yes indeed. I am not 100% certain on this but I think it goes something like this:

            - In the 1930's, The Billiard Player became Billiards and Snooker.
            - Billiards and Snooker for some reason (after WWII) reverted back to The Billiard Player.
            - Then reverted back to Billiards and Snooker.
[Clive Everton appointed Editor in the mid-60's]
            - Billiards and Snooker became Snooker Scene some time during 1972*.
            - Snooker Scene has remained under Everton's editorship ever since.
            - Another magazine Pot Black was took over by Snooker Scene, in I think 2000.
            - Cue Sport also began in 2000 and after the initial 3 or 4 editions came out every two months until reverting to a monthly journal in Nov 2003.

            * World Snooker was published in the early 70's. Without looking into my collection, I don't know if this was Billiards and Snooker renamed and then subsiquently renamed Snooker Scene, or perhaps it was nothing to do with those two. I'll have a look some time.

Try asking a member of staff, even though they dont stock it in the shop, they can often order it in for you.

I can enlighten you on the World Snooker magazine. This was Clive Everton's first magazine under his proprietorship which he started in 1971.

From December 1966 to January 1971, Clive was employed as editor of Billiards & Snooker by the BA&CC who owned this magazine, taking over from Richard Holt who had been editor since 1948. I'm not sure of the exact circumstances of Clive's departure, but I understand that they were not exactly cordial. Within a month he had started publication of World Snooker and began a war or words with his replacement at Billiards & Snooker, Doug Organ. This ended a year later in February 1972 when the BA&CC ceased publication of their magazine, the rights of which were bought by Everton along with the copyright of all the previous incarnations going back to December 1920. At this time the magazine was also renamed Snooker Scene.

You will notice on the cover of the current issue of Snooker Scene it states "for 35 years the voice of the game". This refers to the founding of World Snooker rather than his first involvement as editor of Billiards & Snooker which goes back another five years.

But surely England and America can't be the only countries which publish snooker magazines.

                          WH Smiths

I spoke to Clive Everton once in the hope of getting a product reviewed in Snooker Scene. I asked for a forwarding address because I didn't have a copy and I think he would have punched me if it weren't a phone call. I explained that I had been unable to find one in 2 local WH Smiths and he said it was difficult to get them to take it.
On the subject of Snooker Scene, I know some fans who will read ANYTHING to do with snooker, but are growing tired of Everton vs WPBSA. I'm sure the dispute is important to Clive, but people like things that relate to themselves. Why not have a few pages featuring clubs and their members?, with pics and best players etc. Broaden his readership beyond the hardcore.
Clive must be snooker mad to go through all this agro and keep his enthusiasm though.
