  • Putting the cue ball back when in hand

    Question:

If a "foul and a miss" is played from in hand and the opponent requests that the cue ball be put back, does it have to go back to the same place in the D or does it go back to "in hand" so the offending player can choose a different spot if he wants?

good question, not man ppl know the answer, however you must play the shot from where the person orginally put it in the D, it is because the miss was called for that shot, calling a miss means you have to replay that shot

    hope this helps

Indeed it could be viewed as an inconsistency that a player can change his mind as to which colour to go for, if replaced after a Miss, but cannot change his mind as to where to play the white from, if called a Miss when playing from the 'D'.

But that is absolutely correct. If you play from the 'D' (in hand) and commit a Foul and a Miss, the cue-ball will be replaced in the position you put it in your first attempt and you will not be able to play it from a different point.

But if you're on a colour after a red, and a Miss is called, you are quite entitled to choose a different colour.

(In fact, say I had fouled and left you a free ball, and you played a shot and committed a foul and a miss, and I had them replaced, you would actually be able to choose a red or any colour next time round, although this is not explicitly stated in the rules. But that is a digression from the topic of this thread, so I will say no more on this!)

I agree with all the posts above. The only thing not stated is that if a shot is played from in hand and foul and a miss is called then the cue ball is no longer in hand and so has to be replaced in its original position if the player asks for this option.
