  • using tip clamp or not?

when I retip my cue it sometimes goes alitle off center . I use my "delicate" fingers to try put the tip on the exact center, question is will tip clamp (wood or plastic?) ensure a center spoted tip? and another question which superglue is good for the job?
    thnaks.

I have the same problem myself. I find that those clamps make it even worse as they can move the tip offline whilst you tighten them....

I think the probelm with mine is that the tip is fractionally bigger than the ferrule, so its very difficult to get it centered exactly. Unless its way off though i dont think it matters too much if its just a fraction off.

    Maybe someone else can advise.

This maybe why some players twist their cue so that they can sight along the cue on the side where the tip is perfectly centered..

I think any superglue is ok. Although another member provided some good warning advice - you need to "burnish" or seal the underside of the tip, so that the glue does not soak into it and cause it to go off. This can be done by rubbing the underside of the tip on some wood until it gets stained. This will seal it and stop the glue soaking right into the tip and ruining it.

      Hi

I have an article on re-tipping here: http://www.billiardsboutique.com/ind...AYCAT&catid=61 hope it helps.

I always use a tip clamp when doing re-tipping jobs for customers. The pressure provided by the clamp can move the tip off centre but with a bit of adjustment whilst in the clamp you should be able to get it spot on.

        tip clamps?

i don't bother with a tip clamp. if u use superglue gel u will find u have enough time to get the tip centralised. apply a little pressure with ur fingertip and in a matter of seconds the glue will harden.leave for about 30 seconds to ensure a good bond and the only way ur tip will come off is when u rip it off to replace it. hope this helps.

Yep no clamp and super glue gel is best!
I'd also say get a big tip and trim it down!
My mate gets something like 15mm tips for his 9mm cue!

well thanks for the ideas, my guess turned out right - fingers will do the job .
and my advise is- right after puting the tip, I bang alitle bit my cue to the ground while squezing the tip with my thumb - this ensures tip is well tight .

i dont use a tip clamp. have done, but theyre not worth the effort

have done hundreds of retipping jobs without probs.

use superglue gel, apply pressure and if everything else is prepared correctly you should be able to start cutting and shaping in less than 15 minutes

Keeping both the surfaces flat is the key,u should make sure that there isn't any gap b/w the ferrule & tip.U dont need the clamp just put on the tip using superglue and trim off the excess tip by using a sharp cutter.

I don't use a tip clamp myself, but I do use a bar clamp like the following one : http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=38184 , also I use a two part epoxy (the slow kind).

Super glue, to me, is a temporary fix. Others use super glue and I get to replace their tips after only one miscue or a cue hitting the floor. Most of my tip replacing is on pool cues, which have a variety of ferrule materials on them. I use the same epoxy on snooker cues with the same success.

                    works for me....

just shows you how things work differently for people

ive done hundreds of retipping jobs....cant be too far off 500, "snooker" and "9 ball cues".

i use superglue gel, and apply pressure with my thumb for a matter of 3 minutes or so

only had about 2, maybe 3 tips come off, and the reason being cue dropped outside or on a tiled floor....not bad cueing....and of those which have came off from accidents, its been months later, after lots of play, so certainly wasnt the glue/retipping

I use normal superglue, is there much difference from the gel and normal glue as far as the tip is concerned....

well craig, IMHO, gel is much easier to work with...especially the way i do retipping/glue the tip

normal superglue can seep into certain tips too, if you dont burnish the to be glued surface.

I dont burnish the bottom or sides of the tip but im going to from now on, whats the best technique for burnishing the tip?

I tend to just hold the tip onto the ferrule with my finger applying as much pressure as possible for about 5 minutes, im going to swap over to the gel glue next time i re-tip my cue to see if there is any improvement.
