  • Really need Help Please!

    Evening all

I need help on trying to play well in games.
On a friday night, i go to my local pub and play snooker with a bunch of 65 year olds, (im 20), but i always end up losing, i know in my head i am pretty decent player, but i never play to my potential on a friday night, no idea why.
Just so you know the standard of where i play, if you make a 30 break, they think you are a good player. 20s and 30s are reletavily rare ish for the pub, i have made a 30 odd a few times there.
When me and m8s play tho i just blitze them pretty much but i struggle on a friday night, the setup is, doubles on a friday night (cuz its usually busy), sometimes i get to play singles occationly, i nearly always win on those though...so,

Could anyone give any hints or like good tactics in a game of doubles?
like i said, i am not to bad on singles, but on a friday night doubles i never seem to do That well and its really dissapointing sometimes. (The table is a 8 foot table)

8ft! Whats a kids table doing in a pub?

Anyways I'd say play more safety shots. To win isn't just about outpotting your opponent it's equally about not giving your opponent an oppertunity.

If you play doubles like i do ( and we have won a few local tournaments), quickly assess which one of you is best at

          1) Potting and breakbuilding
          2) Safety Play

Also, assess your opponents on both the above points.

And always "play the balls", not the opposition, take the opportunities as they arise and dont force something that isnt there.

In my doubles, I am a better potter and breakbuilder, whilst my doubles partner is probably the better safety player and we compliment each other well. Its is difficult in doubles as you get one shot in 4 and sods law says you get left with nothing to play at (not easy).

good point Q Ball, look at your strenghths and play to those. I found when i used to play league doubles i would worry about my partner making a mistake, and i found this put more pressure on myself because i would believe i would have to carry my partner, so you try to hard and don't relax. Obviously you must have some ability if you are winning singles, i feel that maybe you are more tense because you don;t have so much control over the game as you do when you play singles, the best approach is to only play shots that you confident of making, there is no need to take risks in doubles, if you make a mistake, you have to wait for 3 players before you have a chance to make it up.

You will rarely find a doubles game where big breaks are made, pot a red and a colour, then play safe if there is no easy shot, if you put your opponent safe, it is unlikely they will pot, and hopefully they will leave your partner in.

The only other point to make is, if you are a good potter and your partner is a good safety player, make sure the good safety player goes before your opponents best potter, that way you can try to limit the risk of your opponents making any sizeable breaks.

Hope this helps, if you need any other help feel free to ask
