Three piece cues

Hello,

I am currently looking into cue cases and have noted that cases are declared suitable for 2 piece or for 3 piece cues. And by 3 piece they apparently mean the 3/4 jointed cues, that's what I understood.

So why are they called 3 piece cues? I mean, a 3/4 jointed cue is comprised of 2 pieces too, i.e. a shaft and a butt part.

Could any of you explain this mysterious terminology?

A 3 piece cue is generally a cue that is 3/4 length and then supplied with an extra extension.
