  • New cue needed...

    Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of getting a new cue in the near future - I play both 8 ball pool and snooker, although I play pool to a higher standard. I bought a cue from a supplier in my home city in Jan 2006, but I'm really dissatisfied with it - in fact, I'm beginning to think it's a bit of a dud, although I don't want to name the manufacturer. When I bought it, I didn't have much experience with cues, and was rather put off by the attitude of another supplier (again, no names), so went for the one with the seemingly better service. Stupid, I know...

Anyway, I'm so dissatisfied that I want to get a new cue. I have around 100 quid to spend, possibly going a little higher if I find something amazing, but obviously if I find a great cue for under 100 then brilliant. The main drawback is that I'm rather tall - about 6'6 - and so I'm not really sure that a standard 58" or even 59" cue would cut the mustard. The only solution I can think of, short of getting one custom made (obviously well above my budget), is to get on with a mini-butt, although I'm not sure how this would play.

Any suggestions? For the record, I'm in the north west, and can travel a bit if necessary, and playing with the cue before I buy is an absolute must, not least because of my size.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Hi Matt,
One thing I can say is please do not go with Wheels in Motion for a new cue, we have one member who has waited and waited for his cue, which he paid over £100 for adn they are ignoring his emails and my calls about it.

Try before you buy, now that is a hard one.........I know a man who can help you but you wouldn;t be able to try before you but unless you traveled all the way down to the south coast

Send Mike Wololdridge a email at www.HandMadeCues.com tell him what you want (ie How tall you are etc) adn give him a maximum budget adn I am sure if you mention that Kevin pointed you in his direction he may well be able to sort you out.

I class Mikes cues the same or even better that John Parris cues.

    Keep us informed.

    Kevin

I've been in touch with Mike Wooldridge before, but unfortunately his cues are pretty far over my budget, so I'd have to rule that one out. I'm tempted to have a look at Craftsman in Leeds, but the height thing is still an issue.

        What about cuecraft?

I have this cue - http://www.cuecraft.com/itemdetail.php?ItemID=42 got it about 2/3 years ago now and have been very pleased with it.

The guys at CueCraft are quite good, you could try talking to them and they may be able to make it bigger for you. I am 6ft 2" and it is just the right size for me. I think the cue should be if you were stood up and the cue was at your side finish to be level with the top of your shoulder.

How much was that cue? I did once play with a cuecraft cue, in a pool tournament at uni, and was very pleasantly surprised indeed. However, I don't know of any suppliers - the north west seems to be a bit lacking in snooker suppliers where you can try before you buy!

Craftsman can do cues to order and their plain ebony 147 model can be made to whatever spec you want. That is £115 so slightly above what you were prepared to pay but you won't get a cheaper custom made cue of that quality anywhere else!
They usually have a good selection to choose from and try out on their table but probably not any cues over the standard length.

My mate has a 59" cue and he is 6ft 3" and finds it just right. Maybe look at 60" but I know from experience that cues over the standard length don't usually play that well because of the extra flex in the shaft.

Trev on here will be able to give you some advice but his cues are well above your price range.

Again ask CueCraft for your loac supplier as they supply direct adn don't use outside sales reps.

I think I paid £90 for it and that was from Rileys in Yate Bristol when I lived down there. I got it as part of a package, it was that cue a Black Graphite snooker cue which I use for pool and a gun metal coloured Aluminium full size case for £230

Ah, looks good. If they were able to make one for me, say 60" (or whatever they suggest), then I would be happy to pay, say, £120. Far rather than that £20 less for a cue which isn't right at all. I might pay a visit to their shop to have a feel of the cues myself.

Don't know where abouts you are in the north west but if you can get along to snookershop in manchester, I believe they have a good range of cues and a table to try cues out on. They have a website too.

I'm in Preston, but I go to Manchester every four weeks or so, so there's nothing stopping me trying there...

                          Hi GreenBaize,

I've had a look at your website - looks like you have some very nice cues indeed. Unfortunately, I think you're just a bit out of the way for me, but if I don't find something I want at some of the places nearer, I'll definitely bear you in mind.

I just wish I'd found this forum before I bought my first cue

Well, something to play both 8 ball pool and snooker with - a 9 or 9.5mm tip, ash, whatever weight feels comfortable (I'd have to have a go with a few). Length is the big problem, as I'm 6'6 tall, and my shoulder is about 63" from the floor, give or take an inch. As far as the look of the cue is concerned, I don't really mind - if it's purely aesthetic, I'd rather save my money and have veneer-less butt.
