  • check side & first shot, breaking the reds

    Hello,

A couple of questions to ask here, your help would be appreciated.....

    A) What is checkside, played on the cue ball ?

    B) What are the rules when " breaking the reds at the start of the game snooker" ?

    Thanks in advance.............

hi, it is a bit hard to explain check side without having an example, you basically have two types of side, running side, and check side (not left hand side and right hand side, this makes things confusing)

Now imagine the blue on its spot, and the white on the brown spot, now if you hit the white onto the right hand side of the blue, the white would head down to the bottom cushion and bounce back off (running side extends the angle - more obtuse - the white comes of the cushion) where (check side cuts the angle down, so the white comes back across the natural line, thus making the angle more acute.)

Now go back to the image of the white heading to the top cushion off the blue, now if you want to add running side, you need to add the side that you want the white to follow, so if you want to widen the angle, you would hit the right side of the white, likewise if you had hit the left side of the blue and the white was going to the cushion, you would need to hit the left side of the white to add running side

So for cheque side you need to do the opposite, so put the side on the ball opposite to the adding running side.

I know it is all confusing, you really need an example - hope it helps anyway

As with the break, you only need to make contact with the reds, you dont even need to split them up, it does not follow pool where so many reds have to hit the cushion, as long as you hit the reds first, and do not foul as a result, then you can break anyway you want, even off 5 cushions if you feel like it

hi harry i been tryin out some different breakoffs and i found that if i put a lot of top running side and catch the last red very thin if you get it right the two corner reds that leave the pack return to the pack and the cueball ends behind the brown the pack looks untouched. practice it before you try it in a match.
questions are only easy if you know the answers

check side & first shot, breaking the reds

              Hi timo,

Thanks for that, will let you know how I get on........

I think I should explain here, that my two original questions are quite seperate issues.............. and that the first question on checkside was a question asking for an explanation of that particular action, and not related to the breaking off at the beginning of the game.........sorry for any confusion I may have caused.
