cue tips: hard or soft?

does anyone know what will give a player more screwback, a hard tip or a soft tip. The people I have asked already have given alternate answers. The reason I ask is that previously when I used a soft tip I was able to screw the ball extremely well but recently, using a new cue with a hard tip, I have been struggling with my screw shots and at times have even played a jump shot; something I would never really do before. Any thoughts?

In my experience, a softer tip will give you more control and may just have that 'gripping' effect that allows you to apply more side/screw/top to the ball.
The downside, compared to a hard tip, is that the tip will require alot more maintenance in terms of shaping/filing etc. It therefore won't last as long.
Personally, I prefer a softer tip as I like to play a lot of delicate, controlled shots.
If I smacked the balls around alot, I'd opt for a harder tip.
Some people don't mind changing their tips often. I'm not one of them, but I prefer the softer tip for reasons above.

Softer tip will generally generate more spin on the white, whereas a harder tip equals more feel through the cue.

I find players tend to prefer a 'fairly' firm tip, BUT, not hard, as they'll say it loses its grip of the white, AND just feels unpleasant.

It about personal preference.

Personally i use a Talisman soft , and a better tip I have yet to find. seems to defy the logic of the appearence of the tip, as they look rock hard and would not hold a grain of chalk let alone the best I have seen, not cheap but highly recommended. go to ADR147 for them they are superb
