  • General cue questions..

I have recently had a cue nicked from the my local wmc. It was a Powerglide Panther, half ash - half Walnut veneer. Not the best cue around but I had it for near on 20 years. Due to this I am now looking for another cue.

I have a carbon fibre jobbie which I'm not struck on and a cheapo 2 piece that was given to me and I've not tried it yet (but I won't hold any hopes for it)

    Now.. a few questions.

I don't play a great deal so won't be spending a fortune - more than likely upto £60 tops. How do peole rate Powerglide now - have looked at their website and they do one in my price range in their Pro models.

Have read threads about cues sold on ebay and it don't look too good - they look to be cheapo imports.

Anyone heard of welsh pool trading? The reading looks good (but I know nothing of them)

What's the difference between a 3/4 and a 1/2 cue (apart from the obvious lol)

Anyways - that's a start, replies greatfully received.

Powerglide to the best of my knowledge are not what they once were, think the cues are now imports like most. (perhaps someone else has more info?)

Welsh pool trading sell a few omin cues which are well made and I think a couple of mike wooldridge made cues. Most of their handmade uk cues i believe are made by mastercraft cues for them. I have a welsh pool cue similar to the model in the link except it has an additional splice of purpleheart wood. (I dont currently use it as its too short for me)

Im sure other users can better tell you the difference between a 2 piece and 3/4 split, but ill have a go. There arent many 2 piece handspliced cues around these days as the trend is for 3/4 cues. I have heard that 2 piece cues sometimes have weight added to the butt to slightly counter balance the weight of the joint at the half way point.

Most 3/4 splits are not made the same as a 1 piece. (ie constructed in the same way and then split) Instead the 3/4 shaft is spliced with small ebony splices and mated with a more or less solid ebony butt (depending on whether there are any additional splices to the butt). 3/4 joints are commonly at 14-16 inches - the more forward the joint the more forward the balance of the cue, which is a matter of personal preference (most cheap import cues from ebay have a very butt heavy balance, which isnt good)

£60 is not really my area of expertise! however welshpool trading is a very nice guy called paul morris who i know to be both honest and helpful.

Thanks for the replies. I can't justify paying any more I'm afraid as that's the extent of my budget. I only play maybe once a month - but enjoy it when I do. Maybies I might start going to a club once a week or so when I get a new cue.

Looking at the powerglide cues on the website, the classic ones look awful - I remember mine as being a solid well made one. Bought it for £30 (no case) from Newitts sport in the early eighties. I thought £45 for a hand spliced on looked cheap - suppose like everything, you get what ya pays for.

I'll keep an eye on the welshpool one on fleabay, but a 3/4 one might be a big big for portability. I have seen some 5 piece (1/2 and 3/4 joints) but they just seam too gimmicky and will probably play rubish.

        Thanks all, Rhys

They usually have loads in anything between £20 and £300!
They also sell second hand cues that can be really good, they have a full table and a pool table to try on!
It's not fancy but a good place to look; I've spent hours in there in the past!
Two of my mates have cues from there and I once saw a lovely old cue that I liked and didn't buy it ( because it was15oz) I changed my mind went back and it was gone I was so sad!
