  • Another Willie Smith ?

There's another willie Smith Handspliced british record cue on ebay now :-

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Willie-smi...item2c7e10313c

Just wondered, when I researched before selling my cue, cues'n'views ( Andy Hunter ? ) said the hand spliced
version was ebony with tulipwood front splice.

This one looks like it has a green veneer and a burrwood front splice.

Anyone on here got thoughts on originality ? I suppose unknown versions of cues must come up now and again ?

No idea about the history of this cue, it's hard to make a view without seeing it, holding it and even removing the badges if there's a doubt.

I will say don't get too caught up with what Andy wrote in articles 15 years ago.. If you speak to him he'll openly tell you that it was only his view at the time, several of the articles need updating badly - particularly the prices quoted which are often a mile out.

Andy doesn't even mention this cue in plain handspliced ebony (I don't think).. and I was contacted by a chap not that long ago who had 4-5 of them, so that's not exactly a rare cue! This is peradon made so basically any badge could end up on any cue, oddities don't worry me too much.

on Andy and Gordon's site they have a version of this cue and it is burr splice with thin green veneer
      http://www.thecuecollector.com/Willi...ecordsCue.html
the one on ebay appears to have a thicker veneer
maybe the difference is whether it is made by B&Ws or Peradon,?

All the cues with that style of badge would have been made by Peradon.

the machine spliced one appears not to be tulip or a burr wood, and again the veneer appears different in size again
as PB has said, "oddities" will happen

Personally i wouldn't touch it, but that's just me, i think old cues should be 57 1/2" min

You could order a cue at any size back then, just as you can now.
Don't believe what you read that every cue under 58" must have been altered or chopped!
..Or for that matter that every thin tip has been reduced at a later date, some players played with 9mm tips even back then.

Not everyone is a giant like John (JRC) who needs a long cue.. John Higgins played with a cue ~56" if I recall, and I'm sure the famous cue of Steve Davis also ended up sub 56", I was only taking to someone about that today. It didn't do their games much harm.
