  • Snooker Crazy Website - Making a Leather Snooker Case

Well after much talking I actually got round to making leather snooker case so I could write a blog and see how much pain was involved.

I have a new found respect for guys that make these cases as it's certainly not a money maker!

I have a blog article on my website for any of you that are interested: Making a leather snooker case

The equipment is expensive (especially as you will inevitably buy the wrong stuff initially), the leather is hard to keep finding and people think the end product is over priced for the effort that goes in.

I'm astounded that anyone makes a leather case at all considering the effort that must be made to research leather, resource everything and finally put the whole lot together and sell it against cheaper products from abroad.

Anyway. I thought I would share the pictures so you could see some of the journey for yourselves. I am now looking at the brass protectors and trying to decide if I ever want to see another piece of leather again!!

Wow great work mate. Shall we call you Crispian Lockley?

That must have taken a lot of cups of tea.

Started off as tea, moved on to lager and then finished with Southern Comfort.........

Well done Woody. I now know how to add the actual pics rather than a link.

            Pics now up!

Constructive criticism if you can so If I make another leather case I don't waste any time doing the same things wrong!

I'm looking at the brass end at the moment and having fun snapping brass as I haven't got it hot enough (blow lamps running down).

Also managed to snap my rubber hammer on the brass so it's certainly a good old test for me!

Hats off to you, for a first attempt that looks good! I contemplated making one myself but then soon realised how much work there actually is to done one properly.

I ended up buying one from a guy called Mark Rogers, really good quality and workmanship- he normally only makes patchwork cases but did something different for me- will get around to posting more detailed pics on the cases thread.

Don't be daft! The real leather is from Unicorns so those cases are closer to 20!

good to see some of your work marc, keep it up.. looks fiddly, how much does it weigh, what kind of wood and did you staple the wood structure together?

                            Thanks J.

It was very fiddly and still is with the brass ends which seem to be giving me a bit of grief.

I tried many types of joints, wood etc and pins and eventually went with glue (strong enough without pins). I tried putting boxes together and then went about breaking them (should video'd it!).

Also tried a few woods, settled with strip pine sides and a birch plywood base. I would probably do this different now as finding a decent strip wood pine that is straight isn't worth the effort, too much rubbish around.

The finished case weight is 2.3kg and I can easily carry it (with the cue and 2 extensions) in one hand, I don't usually use the handle.
