making a cue

A router wouldn't be over kill as I would use a trimming one.
Small and easy to set up, once did to your jig.
Your thinking of the big ones and yes they would be over kill...
With any cue, if your doing what he is, they would ask have to be finished the same thickness at the ferule end of the jig to work the way he is using it..

The trimming routers look nice but as I said in the other post I reckon they have a simpler solution, be interesting if we can decide what that might be.

If the first cut across the cue is only a couple of mm then it can't be a large circular blade as it would probably be unstable, I think they have some sort of mini cutter, I will try and find one that can be secured, I love their ingenuity!

I think the guy from Niche is still fitting the same size ferrules from a bucket of 10mm etc. Maybe it adjusts when they put a different ferrule size on.

I think it's a circular blade like a circular saw but smaller. The cut is across the cue at first with a blade thickness of a mm or two and then it cuts upward but still like a round blade.

That was my first thought, just by looking at the thin first cut, I take it he turns the cue and then turns it as he pulls it gently down to cut all the way around. Maybe a diamond blade on a dremel would do it?

Wouldn't be a diamond blade as it would clog up, just use a very fine saw blade.
Would do it just fine as well.

Yeah he's definitely turning the cue as he does it.

I thought about a Dremel as I have one but I think it would burn out a bit sharpish.

Maybe something similar but a slight bit larger and probably cheaper I reckon. I've seen something a few years ago, just gotta find it!

Yes that would do it and ok as long as your in the workshop but ferrule cutter, you can take with you...

If you were doing cues on mass this device would be good byt tge ferrule cutter is certainly more portable!

Yeah it looks a beast for the money. Brass tubing is in the post so will try my various tube cutters first and see. I like the idea of placing the tub in a pillar drill to level the end off afterwards.

I was trying to make a tip compressing jig a while back and burnt the pillar drill I got off Gumtree out half way through the first hole so will be after a new one soon.

Did you try to drill the hole you wanted, straight of?
Best to start with a smaller one and work up in size..

Nah I got distracted after that with lots of other things so it's on hold as completing a workshop at the moment and sourcing various items.

I did start with a small drill but I think I got a pillar drill that was on it's last legs, I bought it off my brother as well, family eh!

I'd be interested if it did. They are mini pipe cutters of the old sort that used to be for cutting pipes in tight spaces, nowadays they use a cutter called a pipe splice....like this one:

If you scroll down your one it's even got a steel drill bin in the cutter so I think they might be taking the mick with that one!

I've got a few sets in the garage so be interested what grade of brass it would cut; I'd be surprised but but never tried. Cut thousands of meters of copper over the years when I was a nipper but not much brass.

Not so sure it would cut a thick wall brass tube, might have to try some thin walled stuff!

Well I've had a go with a few pipe cutters and there is a method but a decent 'copper' tube pipe cutter will cut brass tube if you don;t go mad at it!

If you clean the guide wheels so grit isn't scraping against the brass and tighten the cutting wheel lightly at intervals it does actually cut a nice ferrule.

You end up with a slight score on the surface which is easily removed with a clean. The cutting wheel leaves a slight indent internally which can be removed easily with the burr remover (supplied with all good pipe cutters).

As for whether the cut line is left square enough to be left flat ready for a tip can be easily cured by either:

Putting the ferrule into a pillar drill and dropping down slightly onto a file or sand paper.

Personally, I just did a very slight figure of 8 on a flat piece of 600 grit and it was fine. I checked it on a steel rule and other devices to see if it was even and it was fine so I guess we are sometimes over thinking it.

I am looking to do some videos for my website with things like this so hopefully will upload a simple video to show how I would do it without causing any damage to the ferrule or creating too much of a burr through cutting to deep with each sweep of the pipe cutter.

What I like it you can cut whatever length of ferule you like with this method!

It was certainly easier than I thought so you can make them as small as you want or as large.
