  • Stance Questions

    1. What is the relation of distance between feet and distance leading foot is forward to player height and player shoulder width? Do tall players need more distance between feet and shorter players less? Do people width wider shoulders need to have their leading foot more forward?
    2. Is the upper body more important in stance in the following situation: For shots where we are extending over the table, our feet have little importance? So we should first find the correct upper body placement?
    3. Professionals seem to have a stance where their bridge elbow is facing the ceiling. Is this true?

I am no coach but have seen that there is no mathematical relationship but that often taller players either have wider stance or bend their knees more (a la Walden) to get down to the low table; and that shorter player don't need to do anything as such as they are closer to the playing surface.
It has been asked many times about body measurements versus stance and even cue length but in the end it really comes down to what works for that person (and that person alone); what is comfortable for that person is not necessarily comfortable for someone else (often actually painful!).

Being comfortable and capable to play the short well still is paramount. Do what is comfortable, if not use a rest - they are there to assist in these very situations. If you over extend you will probably miss and/or not get a good cue ball position after.

"Bridge elbow" do you mean the elbow of the arm that has the bridge - where the cue runs over the fingers? I have never seen a bridge-arm elbow pointing to the ceiling.

Do you mean the back arm, the one holding the butt of the cue?
Then yes, the back-arm elbow does tend to be up in the air to allow the swing of the forearm as you move the cue back and forth for the shot. some players have the arm slightly away (outwards) from the body (when viewed from in front or from the back) and this is often called "chicken-wing" ).
A more vertical fore-arm and elbow means the forearm can move with less thought and obstruction (forearm swinging like a pendulum); but some players do have a chicken-wing - IIRC Ray Reardon had a quite a pronounced CW
But then he was over 6ft and used a short cue so that may be the reason why.
