  • Miscue not a foul?

Sometimes when player miscue you can hear from the sound that ferrule or shaft did touch the white.
If the CB still hits the OB, I have never seen it called a foul. Why is that? Isn't the tip only part you are allowed to touch the CB?

Doing a miscue is not itself a Foul, if the cue ball still contacts the object ball, then no foul
as per the "air shot" thread, you may look a wally and your friends may call you the luckiest so and so but no foul

Now if the ferrule/shaft hits the cue ball then that is a foul as the contact with the cue ball has to be with the tip.
The penalty is the value of the ball on, etc.

The thing is most miscues are still with the tip hitting the cue ball, just really badly
Usually it can be very difficult for a ref to see what actually hit the cue ball due to the speed of the cue except in those shots where the cue "rides" round/over the cue ball and then the cue ball does not tend to hit the object ball, so a foul anyway

I believe that the slow motion footage of miscues, shows the ferrule touching the cue ball after the tip does. Supposedly that is what produces the high pitched sound.
