i oiled a maple cue about a week ago and its still very sticky

Has it been oiled before without any problems? Perhaps it has been waxed or a different finish on the cue? Could the oil have been left on too long its very hot at moment and could get sticky quickly. I'd use fine grade wet and dry 1000grit+ give it a light rub see if the stick feel goes away if so a light coat of oil wiping off any excess leave only a few hours then buff it really well every day for a week or so and see how it feels.

If its dried on excess oil, the only thing I've found to get rid is some fine grade wirewool.

Feel sticky because the maple shaft is too smooth, especialy in humid environment .for example...F1 boat racer sand their fiberglass boat hull to reduce drag and gain rpm and speed.

Yep, wirewool 0000 grade is the best thing for this !!!!!
liquid cuedoktor cleaner also works well. !!!!

In this hot humid weather, wipe the excess oil off quite soon after application, i.e within 20 mins instead of where you may have left if for an hour otherwise.

                      sticky maple cue

I have never left an application of oil for more than an hour before a quick wipe down to remove the excess, then I leave overnight before buffing down.
Then check if another application is required.

the thing is you can have the same result with stickiness on an ash if you leave a thick application on for too long, not just maple
my adage is "little and often" when cleaning and refurbing a cue.
