  • Ivory Balls?

I have a full set of ivory balls for sale, they are from roughly 1890-1920.....

I have been made an offer but not sure if its foe there real value. I have previously been told (on this forum) that ivory balls go for £25+ a ball?

i have attached a link to a couple of photo's below, is £25 per ball an acceptable price or should I be expecting more or less?

In antique stores and ebay those balls are normally sold between 30 and 60 GBP.
But for a complete set it will be less per ball but I think the 20 to 25 GBP per ball are realistic.
Maybe I'd sell the extra cue balls as single balls and the snooker set complete.
I am confused... Oh wait... Maybe I'm not...

A complete set is more valuable surely else you'd sell them individually. Craftsman currently have some for sale on their website at a grand plus if I recall correctly.

Edit: 1800 at craftsman, even at 100 percent retail mark up that would mean they're worth 800 to 1000 depending on condition?

I usually work on £35 a ball for a full sized ivory (2+ inches) ball as a rule of thumb. Unfortunately these are composition balls, not ivory.

Ivory has growth rings, like wood. This is actually visible as a grained structure in the ball and when it cracks it does so radially, from the nerve hole in the centre. The cracks on compostion balls occur through the different density of the bone and the bonding material expanding and contracting at different rates due to variation in temperature. This causes the ball to crack in a more even way across the whole surface. The close up of the ball you have provided is an excellent example of the latter. I would say that the box these balls are in is c.1970 and the contents generally around the same age. If you give me a picture of the lid I could probably say more precisely. Sorry to disappoint.
