My previous cue was 57.5, and I can play with a suitably balanced cue up to about 58.5 - depending on the feel of the cue. I'm 6ft with quite long arms. If you are shortening a cue there are a couple of factors that work against you.....cost, which probably means you could buy a 'better' cue for the combined cost, but also that the cue will change when you shorten it (and may not be any good for you when done).

I'm quite happy for you to have a go, and see how you feel (with no obligation)....but if it feels too long, i would strongly recommend against it for you.

Buy a cue that feels right for you (or do what I did, and buy about fifteen and agonise over which you like best).

Yeah i think your right with the combination cost and with me being only 5ft 9/10 I really think ill struggle with that extra length. Thanks for the honest response and i'll keep looking. I will probably follow your footsteps and buy about fifteen in the end of it. All good fun though haha

    Cheers

These are what i have for this one....it's one of the early cues I bought, so is relatively well documented. I purchased it along with two other Butters cues in June last year. I have a photo of the three cues, signed by Mr. butters confirming their authenticity. You could have sight of that and a scanned copy, if you wanted, should you decide to make it yours.

    ebony_mexican_rosewood4_red.jpgebony_mexican_rosewood3_red.jpgebony_mexican_rosewood2_red.jpgebony_mexican_rosewood1_red.jpg

This was the original information on the ebay listing. It was listed as 'used'. I think Mr. Butters makes them, and then tries them out.

Hand Made one piece snooker cue, medium stiff ash shaft, hand spliced ebony butt with Mexican
rosewood splice and green veneer, 58 1/4 ins long ,, weighs approx. 18.4 oz,, tip approx. 9.8mm ,,
butt approx. 30mm,, has universal butt socket.. A solid hitting cue with plenty of power.
I have re-finished it (although I might do a bit more if you were really interested, it's not quite where i would want it) - sanding and oiling, and re-tipping with a buffalo diamond plus tip. The measurements I originally gave are post-finishing.

try and judge each cue on its own merit.

I have a few unbadged James Butters cues that I might be prepared to let go. I wouldn't sell them and post them, it's not worth the hassle...I'd rather keep them. Given that you are close (I live on the A46 side of Nottingham, and work in Glenfield), I might be prepared to meet you for a frame or two, and you could have a go see if you fancied any of them.

Two that are a touch long for me (which gives me transportation trouble....the cases I like only take 58"). Although they have an ongoing value to me for playing at home.

ebony_mexican_rosewood_red.jpgHand spliced ebony butt, with Mexican rosewood splice and green veneer. SD socket. Medium Stiff Ash, length 58.25", tip 9.8mm, Butt diameter 29.5mm, Weight 18.2oz, Balance point 17.25". Just my least favourite one piece. Not terrifically fond of the look. I'd let it go for £120.

2016_June_JB04_red.jpgHand spliced ebony, purpleheart, ebony, stripey ebony butt, with Mexican rosewood and tulipwood splices and thick maple veneers between all splices. SD socket. Medium Stiff Ash, length 58.25", tip 9.7mm, Butt diameter 29.5mm, Weight 17.6oz, Balance point 17". I prefer a simpler splice pattern, and this is the one that doesn't really sit well with my collection in that regard. It's a nice cue though. £180.

...and then this one. I could let you have a look at, but if this was the one you fancied I'm not sure I could actually let it go.

ebony_quilted_maple_red.jpgHand spliced ebony butt, with quilted maple splice and thick maple veneer. SD socket. Medium to Stiff Ash, length 58", tip 9.7mm, butt 29mm, weight 18.5oz, balance point 17.25". I'd be more conflicted about this one, because I like the look, and I do play with it.

If you are interested in having a go, then let me know.
