  • Vintage Cue Series

Just in case anyone is interested, I am giving a link to the latest publication in the Vintage Cue series of articles by Andy Hunter and myself, Peter Ainsworth. This one covers several of the popular branded cues made by Burroughes & Watts: the Burwat Champion, Ye Olde Ashe, Mascot, and Eureka.

As with the previous eBooks, it can be downloaded as a PDF for anyone who wants to retain a copy for future reference. The full series of articles covering other cues can be found here:

Very interesting read, thank you. BTW Alex Higgins' Burwatt Champion was broken in 1973 and not 1983.

The article refers to this incident. This clipping is from the Belfast Telegraph, 13th October 1983.

The article refers to searching 'yet again' as he did in 1973 when his original Burwat was broken. A page taken from Alex Higgins Snooker Scrapbook referring to the incident, the caption above the photo refers to 1973. Later in the book he writes at length about his cue problems throughout his career from that year, also refers to John Spencer suffering the same. Book was published in 1981 so unless he was clairvoyant it was 1973, I didn't know his '82 cue got broken as well, damn tough luck after finally finding another good one.

That newspaper clipping also wrongly refers to it as a Riley Burwat, instead of Burroughes & Watts

As I understand the history of Higgins' cue, it was stolen in 1973, but returned to him broken, and he continued to use it after a repair which made it slightly shorter. Modern snooker is not really my area, and the reference to Higgins was only included in the article about the Burwat Champion cue because of the publicity that he gave to the brand by launching his national 'HHH' appeal in 1983, which raised public awareness. The events of 1973 didn't hit the newspapers to the same extent, in fact it was hardly reported at all, so it didn't seem necessary to go into that level of detail.
