I don't know where you live, but over here you can get very nice used tables off of craigslist or buy&sell papers. People don't want to have to move them and will often ask absurdly cheap prices( or even free) if you agree to arrange the moving and installation of a table. Get a good piece of slate, good cushons, and pay to get new cloth put on, that's what I did for my 4x8 table. I put Hainsworth on it, paid 200 canadian for the table itself. 500 for the cloth/installation, for a grand total of $700, or about 350 in pounds. It plays nicely.

They obviously won't play as well as a slate bed table, which would be more stable and play more consistently.

True, but a slate table is more heavy (so good luck moving it if you ever need to) and far more expensive as well. Also, this might just be my point of view, but when I buy something, I'd rather buy it new, so cut-price Ebay deals do not appeal.

I had exactly the same thing when I bought my 6ft snooker table. Some people here are of the opinion that it's not worth getting unless it has a proper slate bed, that's all. It isn't an opinion I share: while a woodbed isn't ideal, you can still have an enjoyable game on it and while 6ft isn't ideal for snooker (although you can still have a good game), it's fine for pool! If you can, go somewhere to test one: look out for decent, fast running cloth and good cushion response. For sure, if you can afford it, get a slate bed!

I might find another snooker club near my area which is cheaper than my old club which was rediculously expensive (£20)

I still can't get over that. £20 ph for a damn snooker club! You'd expect each and every table to be Classic Crucible vintage for that, at the very least. But going by what you said, they're not really all that?
