  • Opinion on Ronnie declining the 147?

He's just done something the sport has never seen before, seemingly to make the statement that there's not enough money in the game. I don't believe any other player would have 'spoken out' like this and it seems to have been noticed as I heard it read out on national news shortly afterwards. It sends a clear message about what he thinks of snookers slow decline from the golden years and I think he let a lot of people down in the crowd by denying them perhaps the only chance they'll ever get to see a 147 in person.

Have to say my first reaction on hearing it on the radio was "what a t~~~er".

There are millions of people in this country whose lives could drastically be improved with that sort of money and he just turns it down, not to mention forgets about the people who have paid good money to watch him play and would cherish for the rest of their lives seeing a live 147 from the best player the game has ever seen.

But then his interesting character is what makes him so compelling. Another mad day in the life of ROS.

Not at all, I really enjoy watching the guy like we all do and found it hilarious when he took the pink on instead. I'm just looking for people opinion on the matter

I am a fan of Ronnie and nothing will change that. But to say that £10,000 isn't enough money for him to bother to do something that he should feel obliged to do as a professional player is pretty classless. I'm a fan of Federer as well, and he is way wealthier than Ronnie, but he would never in a month of Sundays show such a lack of respect to the paying public, to whom £10,000 is a lot of money. You should try to make a 147 even if there is no prize money. Also, what's he going to do if the chance comes up again in this tournament? Refuse to do it again? Is he never going to try to make a 147 ever again unless he gets more than ten grand for it? Childish behaviour.

Trying to spin Ronnie's attention grabbing as some kind of heroic act is incredibly dishonest. This was utterly disgraceful behaviour and I'm actually quite disappointed because it's been a while since he's exhibited this level of immaturity in public and I was actually beginning to like the guy.

If you were a big snooker fan who had spent their hard earned money to come and watch, I reckon you'd be pretty miffed if someone deliberately missed a maxi, especially when they arrogantly cite their reasoning for doing so as "not enough money". What an absolute ******. He could have even given the money to charity if it wasn't enough for him, those people can do an amazing amount of good with 10 grand.

I find it amazingly strange how people feel so offended as though they were entitled to watch a 147. Also the fact that people keep mentioning the poor fans who have paid their hard earn cash to see Ronnie play and deserve the 147. No, they do not. You pay for what you get, and whether he got beat 4:1 today or won 4:1 with 4 147's or not its what you get. No one deserves anything when watching snooker. However when you pay or just watch Ronnie playing, chances are your going to be entertained more so than other players.

I do think he would of made the 147 had the audience/fans not been irritating him so much in the early stages of the match. But that's neither here nor there. I feel somewhat happy that he didnt make the 147, because had he done so, it would of just been another 147. With the usual superlatives 'genius', 'amazing', 'mozart of snooker' been used. Since he didnt make a 147, its now causing more lines to be written about snooker and himself which can only be good.

Also, people who keep moaning about 10k is a massive amount of cash for the hard working public, so what? I've never even had close to a quarter of that amount! And I do not feel hard done by, neither should anyone else. Ronnie is not a normal average Joe Bloggs. He can make more money away from Snooker yet chooses to play. As Barry Hearn recently said, no one player is bigger than any sport, but Ronnie is the closest it will ever be.

People should just enjoy watching him play, regardless of his on table antics. As there won't be another player like him.

On the other hand it is good when people are outspoken about things. If it was Ronnies way of saying invest some £ in our sport then fair enough. You should know better what happens when people just take what they are given and sit quiet. Enough to look at falling wages and so on. With him the only problem is his motive. It is not enought money for him or not enough money in general in order to grow the sport and make people actually want to excel at it, gaining financially by sacrificing so much.

Meh, but what a FANTASTIC break! He is some player. There has never been a player that had made it look so effortless. I can be that arrogant around the table and I'm **** lol. Humbling.

Ronnie has a point regarding the prize money for a 147. If you look at the Masters, making a 147 an expensive car worth over 80K and the World's £147K plus another £15k or so for highest break. Now there is a rolling 147 break prize. I bet he's feeling short changed! Making a 147 is a tremendous achievement and should be rewarded accordingly. Maybe World snooker should set a side a fund where if a player achieved a 147 in a ranking tournament then there should be a fixed prize money of min £30k depending on the ranking tournament.

You've just mentioned the two biggest tournaments and are comparing to the Welsh open. You can't expect top dollar every competition
