Hahaha, and snooker carried on even after him. So it will certainly after Ronnie quits too.

      • At the end of the day I don't think anyone doesn't appreciate his talent as a snooker player, just sometimes his behaviour towards the game.
This is how you play darts ,MVG two nines in the same match!

The irony being that it carried on with O'Sullivan.

            • I am currently reading Ronnie O'Sullivan's book 'Running.' It is impressive that a person who has had to overcome so many obstacles has come through the other side and continues to entertain people, inspire people and also continues to improve both as a person and professionally. Like all the rest of us Ronnie is a work in progress, and no one can get inside another person's head or knows what they are dealing with on any given day. Regardless if you agree or disagree with how Ronnie played the game yesterday to sit here and call him names and insult him is just being very mean spirited.

However, I feel Ronnie's 'only £10k' came across as being somewhat insensitive. There's a lot of people out there who struggle to get by in life, despite breaking their back every day. And Ronnie is complaining about getting a bonus of £10,000 on top of his tournament earnings for what would've amounted for a few seconds of work. It's kind of ill-considered, especially in a sport that struggled to bring in sponsors for so many years.

It's brought in a lot of publicity for the game though, albeit slightly negative publicity. What he should've done is score a 146 deliberately, then stood up at the press conference and said; "I did that because this tournament doesn't get enough coverage in the press unless I do something controversial. Hopefully this act will make the dopey twats in the sports pages actually give snooker some attention, for once."

I'd have applauded that. Newspapers love making a big deal out of Ronnie's opinion, so it'd still brought in massive publicity. Chuckling away and going; "I want more money" makes him look greedy. "Snooker player sacrifices 10 grand to promote his sport" would make a much better headline.

I guess it all comes down to whether Ronnie did it to promote the sport, or was he legitimately thinking that £10k wasn't enough of a bonus for all of ten minutes work.
10k was'nt the reason why he did'nt made the max , regardless of what he said in that interview .

It was still a douchey thing to say. If he was lying about his reasons, it doesn't stopmit being a douchey thing to say.

Snookers in the pits that he can do what he wants, play when he wants and the games beholding to him, the time will come though when he's not around and he will be remembered for the disgrace he was to the game, talented yes but a disgrace to the game. Hendry buried him in 99 and 02 when past his best. You Ronnie loving clowns should remember that.

I remember Tony Wilson used to tell Shaun Ryder he was a true poet and Ryder would dismiss this, as he had no education in poetry. In much the same way, I don't think Ronnie understands he is an artist and quite articulates the artistic statements he makes, simply because as a snooker player, he does not fit the profile. However, what he did yesterday was very akin to the artistic merits of KLF burning a million pound on an island and the 'Leeds 13' holiday-grant fiasco... he was holding a mirror at us. We in the west have a very unhealthy obsession with money, in the way an anorexic has for food. As far as I am aware, nobody in the history of professional snooker has made a 147 and donated the money to charity. If John Higgins made a 147 yesterday, where do you think it would have gone? Straight in to his bank account. And the same for Ronnie. So this idea that the money could have gone to charity is an entirely extraneous point of view. Incidentally, that 10k is still in existence, just in the sponsor's pocket, rather than a player's, can't they donate it?

So here, we have an all too rare sports personality, putting principle before money, but we don't applaud that. We live in a magazine culture where figureheads climb and fall an imaginary ranking ladder of popularity and we cue up to judge them and comment, and the rise and falls can be dramatic. Ronaldo earns preposterous amounts controlled in turn by his ego, and we hate him for it. He donates a weeks wage to a sick child and suddenly he's a superhero. This modest act creates with it an influx of parroting social media commentators to come forth with great adulation, usually reserved for dying soldiers. But when we certify them improper, we get sanctimonious phrases like - "He's gone down in my estimation".

When money is either destroyed or squandered, we feel distraught, We do so because it is like they are burning our dreams and desires "Imagine what I could do with that". Yet, what somebody chooses to do with their money, really has nothing to do with us. Our self importance over somebody else's business is sickening. Ronnie has given us an abundance of joy over the years, with his genius comes madness, as it always does. So the argument that fans paid money and should have been duly rewarded with the 147 is moot. As a music fan, this reminds me of some of the enigmas I have watched live over time. They can arrive late, or not turn up at all. The next week, they reveal their unbridled genius and you excuse them, this is what you invested your interest in. On the contrary, if you spend good money on Metallica, you will always get value for money, because they provide pyrotechnics. So you are responsible for which artist you would prefer to see. If you pay to watch Shaun Murphy, then expect ultimate professionalism and robotic personality, you won't be disappointed. If you pay to watch an unpredictable enigma, then expect unpredictable enigmatic things.

By the way, what a masterstroke by Hearn to change his viewpoint today. Initially, it was no surprise to hear his condemnation. I doubt a man motivated by money would understand the artistic merit of another man forfeiting cash to make a point, that is not a language he understands. However, I think he realised last night that he was losing the battle. He has tried to turn the tables today with backhanded compliments and instead put the focus on the headlines Ronnie has made for snooker, which is a canny move.

Ultimately, we forgive geniuses when the dust settles and we understand it was all in the name of entertainment. Alex Higgins has been forgiven of nearly everything he ever did. Geniuses are rightly excused in the end. It also shows us how spurious our personal offence to said incidents are.

No difference for me. Both celebrating the joy and unpredictability of sport, and both within the rules.

It's been said that Mark Williams hasn't as many century breaks as he could have, because he switches off after doing enough to win the frame.

Should we go back and analyse all his one frame visit frames without a century and start criticising him for all the fans betting he would hit a ton ?

Nah ! Life's too short . I feel privileged to have been on this earth while some G.O.A.T. top men and women of quite a few sports have been doing their stuff.

Don't try and mold them into something they're not. ( perfect , and able to please all the people all the time ).

                            • for me Ronnie O'Sullivan as a snooker player is fantastic, a genius when his mind is on the job and i love watching him play, as a person although i think he is tons better than he use to be i still find his antics distasteful.

i have been to many tournaments and can say i have been fortunate to watch almost everyone live bar Ronnie. not sure why just luck of the draw i guess, however had i been watching the game where he made a 146 it wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest that it wasn't a 147.
to me watching a player make a total clearance is as enjoyable doesn't matter the fact that they are all blacks, its just a different coloured ball, the skill to maneuver the cue ball around the table and clear the lot is as good as anything to me.

yes a 147 is the ultimate for the player, as its the highest break they can achieve. (yes i know a 155 is possible) however as a spectator a 147, 146 or 130 clearance tom me is all the same

Lol. American values? What ARE you on about? I see money orientated greedy *******s everywhere, and always have.

Agree about Scottish bitterness, however. What a grateful bunch!
