Perry is one of the more dangerous qualifiers, but Selby is just too solid for him.

I think Murphy's back will be fine, but he may come here a bit rusty and he lately had difficulties in his early rounds at the Crucible.

Higgins - Un-Nooh 10:6
I could see an early Higgins loss, but against Un-Nooh it seems unlikely to me.

Bingham - Lisowski 8:10
One of the toughest calls we have to make. Bingham has the better all-around game and should be a favorite in a match of such length, but there are always some surprises in the first round and this one seems likely to me, though you could debate to what extent it should then still be called a surprise ;-).

Brecel - Walden 8:10
I'm still sceptical about Walden's form, but I feel the same way about Brecel's game.

Trump - Wakelin 10:4

Ding - Xiao 10:7

McGill - Day 7:10
The one first rounder that practically screams upset - the same way like McGill's last year's match against Maguire and we know how this ended.

Fu - Lyu 10:8
Another one that screams upset, because of the circumstances. But Lyu despite all his talent has still many deficits (tactical game, safety play, runs out of position, etc.) and a player as good as Fu, even when not at his best, should be able to live on the young man's mistakes a bit.

Hawkins - Carrington 10:6

Williams - J. Robertson 10:4

N. Robertson - Milkins 10:9
I can see this as a nail-biter for Robertson, but he gets his revenge for 2013.

Carter - Dott 8:10

There are always upsets in the first round, last year 4 qualifiers won, the year before 7 qualifiers won, three of the top 4 seeds beaten, Bingham, Murphy and Robertson. However some of these were quite predictable, Maguire beating McGill last year was almost expected.
So who will cause the upsets this year. Day against McGill and a repeat of last year with Dott beating Carter seem likely. Maguire would have been a good chance if he had drawn someone other than O'Sullivan but that probably rules him out. Fu not playing recently might make him vulnerable and now especially so as Lyu Haotian has a good record against him.

Predictions, starting from Round of 32:

Selby v. Perry
Tough match for Selby. Neither Joe Perry nor Selby have had a great year, but Selby won in China a couple weeks back. Perry's main highlight has been consistent qualification for tournaments, and occasionally going on a run, but he has not seriously challenged for a ranking title this season. The match, however, will depend on their form. If Selby's form in China was a one-off, he could lose; if Perry's good form in qualifying was a one-off, he will likely lose to Selby, whom he hasn't beat in 4 years. After all, Perry's B-game, good as it is, is not up to challenging Selby's B-game.
Prediction: Mark Selby; Score: 10-6

Allen v. Highfield
Mark Allen has slowed down a bit lately in terms of results, but it's not for lack of quality. Liam Highfield, on the other hand, has been struggling for good results all season. Prior to the tournament, he was just above the cut-off. That may motivate him, but Allen is motivated a bit more by maintaining top 16 status, and by not going out as an upset. In any case, his skill should be enough to beat Highfield.
Prediction: Mark Allen; Score: 10-5

Kyren Wilson v. Matthew Stevens
Wilson is a solid top 16 player who has seriously challenged for multiple ranking titles this season. Stevens has fallen far down the rankings, has not reached the QF of a ranking event in 4 years, and benefitted from the early departures of Fergal O'Brien and Mark King in his qualification group. Wilson has never lost a match to Stevens. Stevens, under pressure, has rarely shown backbone. Wilson can thrive under pressure. As long as Wilson maintains control, this could be a blowout.
Prediction: Kyren Wilson; Score: 10-4

Shaun Murphy v. Jamie Jones
Shaun Murphy has found intermittent form this season, but has only won the Champion of Champions. He seems capable of beating anyone, but has had little consistency this season, losing in the first round of tournaments on several occasions. Jamie Jones has just whitewashed Liang Wenbo, and whether that was down to Liang having a bad day or not, a whitewash is good form. Further, Jones has a fairly good record against Murphy. This will be another match determined by form, but only Shaun Murphy's. If he is on, Jones has a shout but not a good one. If he is off, Jones will win. I'm also concerned about a few things. First, Shaun Murphy has been bringing up his back pain as an issue. Second, Murphy's cue-ball control is terrible when off-form. Third, that Jamie Jones kept a player who nearly had 2 maximum breaks in qualifying from getting any breaks over 40.

John Higgins v. Thepchaiya Un-Nooh
John Higgins' form has been patchy, but he is back as a serious force. Thepchaiya Un-Nooh is a good player, but he is not at John Higgins' level. Needless to say, John Higgins is also capable of bad form, and Thepchaiya is capable of good form. Over a longer format, however, form is temporary, and class is permanent. And form that has already won 2 ranking events this season with a player of John Higgins' class will likely go through.

Stuart Bingham v. Jack Lisowski
Bingham has had the more success this season overall, but Lisowski has had a bit of a breakthrough season, and his climb up the rankings has been impressive. His qualifying match against McManus, although he won 10-3, might not speak too much to his form, given McManus' current struggles, but he has shown his class in recent events. Bingham can't be discounted completely, however; he has had good results in both tournaments and in matches. Further, Lisowski has not won a match against Bingham in 7 years. Whether this will change in Sheffield is up to Bingham, who may be moving past his peak. As it is, I can see this being a close match.
Prediction: Jack Lisowski; Score: 10-9

Luca Brecel v. Ricky Walden
These two tend to play close matches. Even while Luca Brecel has won 3 matches to Walden's 1 between them, Luca Brecel has only won one more frame against Walden than Walden has against him. To boot, Walden whitewashed Brecel in the Championship League this season. Even beyond their record against each other, we have a tight match on our hands. Brecel is younger and more talented, but he hasn't had good results since the UK Championship. Walden has had better results lately than Brecel, but he is older, has fallen a bit down the rankings, and less talented overall. This match should come down to who gets a run going first; in their matches, it seems that Walden starts strong, but in a longer format, loses his stamina against Brecel. However, in a longer format, this can change drastically. After all, talent requires on form more than anything.
Prediction: Walden; Score: 10-8

Judd Trump v. Chris Wakelin
Summarizing these two players seasons is easy. Wakelin qualifies for events and can achieve incredible match results, like whitewashing Shaun Murphy. However, he has only 2 quarter-final appearances in ranking events, and none this season. Trump has occasionally lost in qualifying, but when he hasn't, he often finds himself getting to at least the 4th round of tournaments. All-in-all, Wakelin's quality seems to be a wildcard we cannot estimate, but Judd Trump has played long and hard matches before and come through. I think Trump can do it again, as long as he plays tight.

Ding Junhui v. Xiao Guodong
Ding has maintained his top 5 status, and reestablished himself as one of the best in the world. Xiao Guodong had some good form around the New Year, but has dropped off a bit since then. Given that Ding hasn't lost to Xiao since 2009, and has honestly dominated him in most of their matches, I don't see Ding losing this one.

Anthony McGill v. Ryan Day
A very difficult match to call. Day has been on fire in some recent events, and McGill has not been as bright. At the same time, while tied for matches, McGill leads Day in frames won, and the matches where Mcgill has won over Day have been more convincing than Day's victories the other way. In a longer format setting, where McGill is more rested, Day may have trouble running enough frames together that McGill can take the initiative.

Marco Fu v. Lyu Haotian
This will be the most difficult match to predict, purely because of Marco Fu's leave from snooker. Will he arrive at the Crucible ready to go? Will he need time to adjust? In either case, Lyu Haotian has won 2 of the three matches played between him and Marco Fu, so it will not be easy for Marco Fu anyway. If he is ready, he can take down Lyu; if not, this will be a cakewalk.

Barry Hawkins v. Stuart Carrington
No match data between these two, we don't quite know how they will play against each other. However, if we judge by form, Hawkins has reached two ranking finals in the past two months, while Carrington has never gone beyond a quarterfinal. Milkins, who has been trying to rebuild his ranking, has come off with mixed, but decent results, including a match win over Neil Robertson just last year. However, Roberston seems to have gotten back to his usual quality in China, and his play is better than Milkins on the whole. I don't see an upset here.

Graeme Dott seems to have Ali Carter's number in their recent matches. He also has the benefit of a more consistent season, with better results in the new year than Carter. Dott's run at the German Masters saw him take out several top players; Carter has lost to several lower-ranked players this year, and hasn't been challenging as seriously for silverware as his ranking would suggest. All-in-all, it still could go either way, but Dott has the edge

A meeting of the two players Shaun Murphy loves to hate, this will be an entertaining affair. Ronnie O'Sullivan has won 5 ranking events this season, and in style. Stephen Maguire is trying to regain his ranking, and has done most things well in that regard, although he hasn't won a ranking event this season. The match record of these two is heavily favoring Ronnie, but Stephen is not a pushover. Again, a fixture that can go either way; but if we have to pick, we should pick someone with far more success this season, a cooler head when things don't go his way, and has dominated matches when he turns on.

Admitting my bias: he is one of the Pro's that I enjoy watching; and hope he can sort out his (glaring) failings.

at the moment i can't see jack doing that, he just goes for one too many, which against the top players (as he did in the China Open against Wilson) will get punished.

no doubt he is a great talent, however how many who have similar talent on the tour are in the same boat. he has time on his side and has a lot to learn before becoming a world champion
