Foul or not?

Hi, in a game the other day my opponent rattled a red in the corner pocket and it jumped up onto the cushion and rolled halfway down before stopping dead in the middle! We put the red in the pocket and decided no foul was committed. Was that right?

No red goes into the pocket

It was a foul because it was considered to be 'forced off the table': ie it did not come to rest on the bed of the table nor legally potted.

Reds are never usually replaced on the table, so it would go in a pocket and remain off the table. If it had been a colour it would have been spotted, or played from in hand if it was the cue ball.
