  • Martin Gould change of cue action

Did anyone notice Martins comments after winning the recent PTC that he has changed the way he sights a ball......

"Last week I started working with a coach called Stephen Feeney who has done a lot for the likes of Mark Davis and Stuart Bingham. He noticed a fault in the way I was sighting the ball and fixed it straight away. The improvement has been beyond my expectation and every time I was among the balls this week I felt as if I was going to clear up.

Found this interview on the world snooker website.

Be interesting to know exactly what he has changed....maybe walking into the line of aim?

What is the sight-right technique for siting, and getting in the line of shot please, anyone know?

Just a piece of wood with line on. There is.a further raised piece of wood that you cover up. You walk into the shot and then when down the two lines should line up straight if you have got down online. Steve davis used it

i think that you can tell instantly if you are online or not.because you will see a broken line.
i wanted to get one myself to check that i do get down online. i have decided to make one myself. you can use a piece of cardboard and draw a straight line. the have a raised bit and draw a line that is directly in line with the other.

This product has been around for a while and the same principals can be applied in other sport, eg darts. I can understand
the theory behind it. Without seeing footage of Martin before or after he started using this, I wonder is he just
approaching the line of aim differently or has he slighly corrected his stance/alignment

Martin used to be very open on angle shots, thus being prone to cutting the ball thin. All steve has done is brought into line with the shot. I use Steve Feeney as my coach with the sight right product and it transformed my game. It's all to do with points of aim and contact points. Steve doesn't touch cue action just the way you approach the ball.

                    Ant147:

For me that's very interesting and I would love to give it a try as my vision is going to be changing (yet again) when I get my new special contact next month and I'm a little worried it may change the way I see my line of aim when I'm down on the cue in the address position.

Where does Steve hang out? I'm thinking this time when I come over I'm going to try the Star Academy in Sheffield for the first 3 weeks in May or something near there. Will Steve work with anyone, or just professionals? I spotted an short story on him in last month's SnookerScene I think and it was one of the pros talking about how he improved the ability to 'see' the line of aim when they're down on the shot and stops them from second-guessing themselves.

Thanks for that info Ant147, I know this might be difficult without the visual aid of the sight right product, but can you talk us
through how it's helped you and how you now walk into the shot?
                      cheers

Terry : Steve will work with anyone. Off the top of my head it was £225 for the 1st time you get together (3hours), then £150 for 2 hours every session after that

Johno : I had the same problem as Martin (very open) I had still photos taken to prove this point. Instead of being front on to the cue ball I was at 10 o'clock thus cutting the shot thin. I also stood fractionally to the left of the white so as I walk into the shot I can never be on the right line. It is hard to explain without demonstration. Hope you get what I mean!!

Yes dean I used to see the lines across and not in a direct line. This has now changed to be right

                              Ant:

75GBP per hour is a bit expensive but if it really helps then I guess it's worth it. Being over here in Canada I think I will try and make a similar device and see what I'm doing and what I actually see.

I used this device before when I was at Terry Griffiths' Matchroom however I remember I actually say THREE lines with the centre one being darker than the outside two lines. This is because I had distortion in my right eye at that time, but now it looks like I'm getting that corrected and the right eye will not have any distortion so it will be interesting to see what and how many lines I get this time.
