Ding's new cue

Seems ding has been using a new Ton Praram cue at the Wuxi classics. Source from ton prarams Facebook page. Maybe Ding's poor form this year has made him make such a decision. Quite a few more on the Thai cue band wagon. Do you think it will last?

That is interesting. I know he had been using a Stamford cue previously - and he had that for a long time. They told me his cue specs are VERY difficult to make, so either he has changed his specs or they've come up with something that seems to work!

He has had more cues made for him than Dominic Dale lately !!

As long as a player is happy with a cue , i don't think it really matters where it came from or who made it .

Wuxi Classic? do you mean the World Cup, being played in Wuxi?
It has been commented that Ding has been looking around various makers for cues for a while now, first time he has used a new cue (from the Stamford one) in anger so to speak

That's very true. While some cue makers may have a good eye for a nice bit of wood, its pretty much luck of the draw if someone gets an ideal bit of timber I guess! There are lots of good makers out there these days!

In my opinion a vast majority on here would give their right arm for a Robert Osborne , Trevor White or Mike Wooldridge cue .

Yet hardly any Pro's use these .

Always wondered why that is ........but having spoken to a few Pro's , they have never heard of many of the ' Other ' Cue Makers .

Marco Fu was surprised that i knew who Reg Wright was .

Tony Drago had never heard of Trevor White either .

Ah now I did know the answer to this - but can't remember now!! I know he favors a ridiculously stiff shaft - which can be difficult for makers to source. But yeah I think that, combined with the tip and butt sizes, balance point and particular taper that he likes. All make it very difficult.
I know he got 7 cues made by JP, and dismissed all of them as "rubbish"!! That is when he went to Stamford and they did one that he liked straight away. Pot luck with him maybe (no pun intended!!).

This is just my personal opinion, but I always thought Mike Wooldridge sounded a little bitter that no top pros use his cues. Maybe that is unfair, but I've seen him take a bit of a swipe at John Parris for sending pros free cues. You are quite right though, it seems the pros only use a handful of makers, and I am really surprised that those 3 cue makers you mention aren't supplying cues to top 16 players. As far as I can tell, and from what I have seen, those guys' work is every bit as good as a JPU.

The only bit I am not sure about - and this is only because I've not experienced it, but I could be totally wrong!! - with John Parris and also the guys at Stamford, they understand the game and the players' requirements really well. I am not saying that Trevor White or Mike Wooldbridge don't do this - I just don't know?! But if they don't, maybe that is the difference?

oh god I know! Can't really mention JP on here without it kicking off big time!!! That honestly wasn't my intention!

Just want to say for the record that I think John Parris cues (well, the Ultimate at least) are top quality. But no better (or worse) than the top offerings from other well known makers in my opinion!

And at the end of the day Tim , that is what it is all about . Personal preference .

I've had a few TW's , Osbornes , Glovers , a JP etc......all good cues . But i still prefer Trevor White over the others .
