I would still recommand to anyone who feels able to, to read the original in English. Simon Hattenstone did a great job in rendering the typical "cockney speak" of the main subject of the book! I couldn't see how any translator, how good he/she might be, could possibly pass this on ... After discussion with two german friends who read both the original and the translation I have my answer: it can't be done. The languages are too different and slang as well as dialects only add to the difficulties.

I read it in English as well but there are a lot of german fans who just don´t speak english at all or to a low standard. For them it´s of course better to read it in german than not read it at all. But it´s true, it´s hard to translate the cockney and other slang. You just don´t find the right words in german.

That's exactly what I wanted to say, nothing more and nothing less. The problem would be identical in French...

Id be happy to see it published here , even if the translation wasnt accurate . But unlikely to happen.
