I've been playing a lot of chess for the last few years and have improved a lot. I view it like snooker and just takes a lot of practice to become a stronger player. Does anyone else play or follow chess and see the similarities in the tactical side when comparing snooker and chess?

Used to play chess in my younger years, woefully out of practice these days! Still keep my eye on whatever shenanigans Carlsen is up to etc though! Tactically wise, it's a little different, as you have to second guess your opponent a lot in chess, whereas in snooker, you 'play the board' as it were!

I think pool is closer to chess than snooker, especially if you view it from a slightly different angle. Unlike snooker, you have two distinct sides, red and yellow and one king, (the black) who you must eventually kill. But to get to him, you must first kill all of your opponent's men (by potting them) or flush them out into the open for later slaughter, whilst trying to keep your own men safe. Viewed like this, it takes on a whole different feel, which I really enjoy. If after battle, all of your opponent's men and the king are dead, and all of your men are still alive, you're a true hero!

I used to play a lot when I was young, I had stopped playing for years and went to a friends house after three of us had been playing snooker, my two mates were playing chess and I asked to play the winner and my mate said it would be pointless as I would just get thrashed, I had forgotten most of my old moves so studied the game during the week, I played my mate and beat him , the next day he turned up at mine with his chessboard and asked if I wanted to play for money, half an hour later he went home in the huff £200 and 4-0 down
