Epoxy can fill the gaps even if the ferrule is not 100% flat.
Most tips I would say are quite reasonably flat on the bottom so that should not be the problem. Some people use the sanding disc to sand the top of the ferrule and end up making the top uneven because the disc moves all over the place when it turns. I am not sure if there is a proper way to use that as I never really try one.
When you replace your tip, just take off the old tip and the excess glue with a blade, do not take off the wood and metal. O, and please do not use too much glue, you are just going to waste it plus making a big mess.
