  • What does the ideal tip look like?

The general description of what a cue tip should be shaped like is "dome-shaped". Anyone got pictures of what the ideally shaped tip should look like? I'm not particualrly happy with my tip shape at the moment and tried shaping it but then I realised I wouldn't know what I'm trying to achieve. The main issue I have is with trying to screw back. I don't get enough back spin on the cue ball and when I try it a bit lower, the ball then jumps. I think it may have something to do with my cue tip not shaped well enough to grip the cue ball. I'm lowering the bridge as low as I can too (as per Steve Davis' instructions).

Are you sure it's not your cue action?

This happened to me lots of times and I too thought it has to be the tip.
But as long as it's somewhat "dome-shaped" it'll be fine.

The cue-ball easily jumps if you have a jerky cue action. Try to accelerate
through the cue-ball and follow through quite a bit.

I'm pretty sure my cue action isn't that perfect either but I'd like to have a good shaped tip to rule that out completely. Doesn't help the confidence if I'm half sure its the action with a niggly feeling the tip could be improved.

Yes, I currently have that as one of my Favourites for my browser. From that video, its not all convex shaped but flat on the top and curved slightly around the edges. Its that what its meant to look like?

Hello, I dont know if this is any use, I dont even know if it will appear on here ive never done this type of thing before im just playing around,

I made a tip shaper for a friend who cant file tips consistently and he now swears by it, so much so i have had to make several more for other friends who have the same problems.

The tips in the photos show a fully convex type shape as opposed to a flat top and curved sides. So, which is better?

well actually... i never noticed that.

a nice gentle curve all over is better but the general shape is perfect.

                    i'll sack the animator...
