  • My New Cue - Craftsman Majestic

I stumbled across this forum around Christmas time when I had decided I wanted a new cue.

For the past 12 years I had used a 16 oz, one piece with an 11mm tip. It is an old Riley Joe Davis job and to be honest i felt like a bit of a change, and wanted to treat myself to something new.

Whilst wanting to treat myself I am still a bit of a tight arse, so could not force myself to stump up the £400+ for a Mike Woolridge, Parris or the like. But having read the forum and wanting to try a few different specs out before ordering I decided to pay Craftsman Cues a visit in Kippax.

As my season did not finish until May, and did not want to change mid-season, I went up in March and had a go with the ones on display before plumping for ordering one to be made - an 18oz, one piece Majestic with a 10mm tip. Simon in the shop there advised me that there were no guarantees that the cue they would make me would suit me any better than any of those that were in the rack - he spoke with an honesty and openness that I found very reassuring.

6 weeks later, and bang on schedule the cue was ready, i went up to pick it up, but because my season had not finished it had to sit in my dining room, unused for a fortnight. Well the season has now finished, and i managed to get an hour's knock in before the Champions League on Wednesday night.

I must say that I am very impressed with what I have purchased. The butt is a little thicker than I am used to and i am finding that i am overcompensating for the increased action I am getting on the cue ball, but these things will sort themselves with practise. The tulipwood butt looks fantastic!!

I urge any one who is within striking distance to pay the shop a visit, they have a wide selection of cues in the rack, and a table to try them out on. They were really busy when I went there, but still took the time to sort me out.

On thing I did discover was though that the cue, mini-butt and telescopic extension doesn't fit in my current cue case - so once again I have followed the advice given on the forum and Crispian Jones of North Wales Cases is currently working his magic - hopefully I will be reporting on the finished product in a couple of weeks.

Thanks to everyone who posts in the Cues and accessories section, whose contributions I have taken in, and I hope this post will be some use to those who are pondering making a new purchase

It just goes to show that there is no substitute for visiting a snooker shop and testing a variety of cues on a table. We all talk about specs and stuff but what matters is what a person feels comfortable with in the palm of his hand.

Glad to hear you found what you wanted. Craftsman don't get the credit they deserve because they are seen as more of a budget option whereas all they are actually doing is pricing their cues realistically but they are every bit as good playing wise as any other top end cue maker.
