I think adding a joint yourself without the skill of a cue doctor could end in tears. It might completely ruin the blance of the cue. To add extra weight you could extend the butt instead of adding a joint? Or perhaps use a plutonium ferrule!

I've previously successfully fitted joints to 3 cues.
By fitting the joint at the balance point, it doesn't change the balance of the cue, just increases the weight by the weight of the joint, which is usually about 1 ounce.
I prefer to use Tungsten rod for weight if needed. It's very dense (19.3)compared to lead (11.3). Also, its fairly inert as opposed to plutonium (19.8) which oxidises rapidly when exposed to air.
