Says not for use with oil finishes though....

thanks for all the suggestions though folks and feel free to add more, I might try a few different ways with the cheap cues I have so I can see what method works best for me.

If you do that, the oil will pull some of the filter back out.
Want something that is not oil based.
For that one you've always wanted...

That's fair enough, as I say I'm learning. You posted a link to it, I read it and it says not for use on oil finishes. I'll have a look at one for use with oil finishes. Ta

Didn't say you did! Best wood finishers are luthiers by far, they show everyone else up

I didn't say you did but your message wasn't clear to me!

I'm far from the best finishers but have worked and learned from some great ones..
How do you come by idea?
It was you that said, what I had said was rubbish..

No dramas, I got my wires crossed as well as to who sent link. Happy faces all round and a good bunch of idea's here. Got a few cheap cues to try out a few of the different methods. Looking forward to it.

No sweat. The point us that there are people who genuinely want to help and they may have different opinions as to the right way but that's ok as we all have a choice which way to go.

In the past, and because this industry is full if secrets you would gave seen tumbleweeds on the thread nit answers.

I think it's refreshing and will also try these ideas on everyone else's cues but not my own.

Just kidding, I gave some old cues as well.

You could simply not use a grain filler at all, just sand down to 400 grade, apply the clearest oil/wax finish you can, final rub down with 0000 wire wool and leave it to patina naturally as it ages.

Now that's the easiest and most sensible option.
