  • Closer the grain, stiffer the wood?

    I always believe that the closer the grain, the stiffer is the wood.
    However, I have heard this recently, and want to know your opinion:
    "the dark grain on ash is the breathing hole of the wood. They are less dense than the lighter part. Therefore, too much of the breathing holes can lower the density of the wood, making it softer. "
    I think wood breaths through its entire surface, sin't it?
    I also think that the darker grain are the stronger "spine" of ash, since they tend to dry up faster. At least that is why I believe one can feel the dark grains on an old piece of ash.
