No, they aren't difficult to make, because they are pre made elsewhere.

All the cue makers I know who use these in splice work have these made for them and do not make them in house.

    Including myself.

          • You mean Dave Coutts Andrew, does he make his own?

I know he's done a few cues with various style front splices.

            • dan shelton chequered spliced cue

would be nice if dan was honest enough to name the maker of the splices as he said that he would when he supplied the timber

              • Ah, No need to answer that one Andrew......haha.

                • I believe Dan makes his own.
That is what he told me and he has shown me pictures of the splices before they were put on this beautiful cue.
                  I believe him.
Dont think he has any reason to lie about it.

the only picture he will have is of when he cut the block in half at an angle to make two splices, strangly enough i could photos to show the making of it without the ebony sides and maple veneers, just wish dan would say yes he made cue, but had the splicing made for him, surely thats not too much to ask

                    • Poolqjunkie, I think you are misunderstanding this a little.

no one has accused Dan of lying about anything, I was replying to a question asked about how difficult these kinds of splices are to make. To the best of my knowledge, virtually all makers buy these in, pre-made, and do not make their own.

                      • Dave (Louise Sheldon) has pretty much answered the question here anyway.

I'm sure a good number of makers could make these if they were inclined to do so. However, for me, it isn't worth the time or the trouble as I use so little of this style of splice work. Besides this chequered style of splice, ALL of my work is done by me and is not outsourced.

It isn't a crime to do this, it's just economical. It would be like making my own brasswork such as joint and ferrules, without the requisite CNC machinery. Just not viable at all.

                        • these pics show the splices on the dan shelton cue in the making by myself!!!, after this stage they will have had the maple veneers and ebony sidse out on, the squares are 7mm hence the ebony sides as 3x7=21 this gives you a pattern of 3 most of the way up the splice
