    I was just looking at some photos of how steel block cushions are put together. Surely the quality of the rebate wood block between the steel and rubber must be of very high density, otherwise it's hard to understand why use steels when there is a lump of wood in-between. This would appear to defeat the object of having steels.

      You have to have wood block to staple the cloth to , and yes the harder the wood the better the bounce but hard wood is not good to fire staples into
      a fine line has to be found between hardness and softness to get good bounce yet good depth of staple entry into underside of block to keep cloth fastened tightly .
      Scotch pine is a good wood to use as it has hardly any knots in
