  • Complete newbie need advice

    Hi
Need some help, really new to snooker. Would like to geta little better but having trouble. high break of around 8 max. lol

I cant get backspin on no matter how many times i try. Yet to get the damn ball to come back toward me.
I have a £50 cue so its only a cheap basic starter cue.

Tried hitting slow, quick, medium, v fast. everything. Following through when striking.
Any ideas what im doing wrong?

Just to verify that £50 is a good enough price for a cue.

Practice, practice, practice will only improve your breaks.

For backspin, hit the bottom of the cueball and follow through.

Here is a link to a youtube video, watch it, it will benefit you :

Turn the volume up and enjoy, anymore questions fire them at us people on the forum.

I think that has nothing to do with the cue. Maybe you technique is bit out.
Look some coaching advise and videos in youtube. Hope that helps.

50GBP is good enough for beginners. Correct those mistakes before investing more later on.

                Thanks for your replies.

Been watching those videos before i started trying. I was wondering could it be my cue tip?

                I have this:
                http://www.jjbsports.com/ronnie-o'su...p-product/6409

my tip has some black area after the brass and before the tip (area to chalk)
Is this tip a glue or screw type?

                  Could possible be screw type.

Try out different cue tip to see which suite you.
I would recommend you to try out the medium cue tip.

Blue diamond and Omin cue tip are my choice

                  Cheers

The cue has nothing to do with it

I've got a cheapy £15 quid cue that i picked up when i wasn't very interested and played casually and i can screw back with that. And the tip is a good few years old (possibly 3?).

Another example of snooker players putting so much/too much on a cue.

Just watch a few videos, understand what follow through means visually, and just try and copy it

Sadly not. It's a case of 'do as I say, not do as I do'.

                        Fair enough pal.

I'm so surprised how many people have problem with the basic screw shot, even when I first put the cue in my hand within a few times on the table I picked it up very easy.

Follow that and you should have no problems.

Maybe everybody have problem in performing certain shots.

Some video example might give them a good guide..
                          Nice video pal

If the tip is not very good and not shaped then even Robertson would struggle to get much action on the ball. I don't like screw in tips, they don't seem as solid on a tip thats glued on and it is hard to find a decent tip to put on the cue.

lol i doubt it. I've got a crappy little 15 quid cue i picked up from JJB when i wasn't that interested in snooker and the tip has got to be 3 years old now and i can screw the ball back. I'm sure if i can screw back, then a pro can :P
