  • Somauroo clinches Salisbury Cuestars title

EX-PROFESSIONAL Richard Somauroo claimed the £150 top prize in the second Cuestars South of England Championship Tour event at Salisbury Snooker Club.

The Northolt cueman accounted for home player Nathan Williams 2-1 in the final.

Somauroo, ranked 236th in the world in 1999, qualified in second place in his group after losing 2-0 to Matt Wilson, who had beaten Westbury’s Ben Harrison in the Swindon final last month.

“It was a well-run tournament,” he said. “Best-of-threes all the way to the final and all finished in one day. Round-robin is popular, guaranteeing players at least four matches. John Hunter puts a lot of effort into these tournaments which is much appreciated by all.”

A high-quality 44-strong field from across the South of England chalked up 26 breaks of 50 or more. Centuries were scored by Christian Chislett (Selsey), 117, and Phillip Wildman (Swindon), 103.

Wilson (High Wycombe), who made a 2-1 semi-final exit courtesy of Williams, posted three 90-plus breaks: 99, 98 and 92.

Swindon’s Richard Clark, currently 90th on the Pontin’s International Open Series, lost in the second semi 2-0 to the champion.

The Salisbury tournament was the second in a series of eight across the South of England. Remaining fixtures: December 13, Ambassador SC, Poole; January 17, Jesters SC, Swindon; February 14, Salisbury SC; March 21, Jesters SC, Swindon; April 18, Salisbury SC; May 16, Jesters SC, Swindon.

    About Cuestars

Founded 16 years ago by director John Hunter, Cuestars runs grass-root snooker tournaments across the South of England and South Wales.

Competitions take place on Sundays between October and June, and cater for players aged eight to 80 - and in some cases even older!

All Cuestars tournaments, apart from the Team Challenge, are played off scratch. There are no handicaps. Cuestars uses a round-robin format leading to a knockout.

The Cuestars ‘South of England’ Championship Tour, which has no age limit, consists of eight tournaments. The top-16 ranked players will be invited to the end-of-season play-off for the title of Cuestars ‘South of England’ Champion. And the top eight aged 50 and over will play off to find the Cuestars ‘South of England’ Masters Champion.

There are three under-21 tours. Gold is for players with a high break of 60 or more, Silver is for players with a high break between 40-59 and Bronze is for players with a high break of less than 40. After eight tournaments, the top-eight ranked players from each tour will be invited to the end-of-season play-offs to find the Gold, Silver and Bronze ‘South of England’ Junior Champions.
