Situation so far...

World Number One:

For winning his opening match O Sullivan is now uncatcheable at number one.


Top 16:

Top 10 are mathematically safe in the top 16, as the 7th best live player in the draw (Steve Davis) can only get as high as 31744 ranking points which will not catch Hendry in 11th.

Of course If I had the time or the motivation I could probably prove that pretty much all but King and Williams are probably safe due to draw permutations but its a lot of time to take at a risk of getting it wrong.


However, the following players can make the top 16 on certain Conditions,

Cope:

If King loses to Maguire/Burnett, He needs to make at least the semi finals, and Hope that Davis does not make the final, or that Holt/Lee don't become world Champion.

If King reaches the quarter finals then Cope needs to make the Final to overtake Williams.


Davis, Holt, Lee:

All have to make the Final and hope results go their way.


Dott:

Needs to become world champion and still hope results go his way.



Top 32:

Burnett and Higginson each need to reach the Semis or beter to enter the top 32, neither can make top 16.

I'm afraid it's worse than that,

By my calculations, he needs to win the whole thing and hope that at least one of the players currently ranked 5-8 lose their next match.

I think Allen, Robertson and Ding are all mathematically safe as well: Ebdon can easily catch them, but otherwise at most one of King/Davis can catch them, and at most one of Cope/Holt/Lee can catch them (and no-one else).

And as you say, it'd take a weird set of results for Ebdon to be caught, even if he loses to Bond.

Updated after first round now.

Top 32 is set in stone and the top 16 is almost confirmed.

The top 14 are guarenteed top 16 status next season with then two out of WIlliams, King and Cope taking the other two places.

The top 7 are definately in the top 8 for next term, with only Roberston and Jendry in with a chance of displacing Selby.

For someone who is itnersted in snooker, but not so much the technicalities, what exactly are the provisional rankings? The rankings where 1. Ronnie, 2, Maguire, 3. Selby, 4 Murphy are what rankings?

I keep seeing provisional, and I'm not exactly sure what they are.

The official rankings are the ones calculated after every season, and where you stand in those rankings determines whether or not you have to qualify for tournaments.

The provisional ranking list is simply keeping an eye on the rankings as they change with the points given out in every tournament. In itself it has no bearing on anything, except of course that it turns into next season's official ranking list when the season's up.

If you go to the World Snooker website, you can see both the official rankings, the provisional ones and the points schedule, which is all you need to calculate the provisional rankings (bear in mind they are based on two seasons).
