              1937

An article in The Times on February 22 (47615) noted:

"Snooker pool [as it was still normally referred to – or 'Snooker’s Pool'], which is being played with so much interest at the present time, is a game of comparative modern invention, and was given little consideration in the days of that band of players who helped to make the game of billiards what it is to-day. Until recent times the modern professional player had little affection for the potting game, regarding it merely as of secondary importance, but the advent of the younger Lindrum, and the challenges which were made last season by the Canadian players altered the outlook considerably. The championship on that occasion attracted a record entry and, although the number of competitors this year in the competition which will be begun to-day is not so large, it includes all of the leading English players, who will be challenged again by H. Lindrum, a nephew of that famous player who showed the possibilities of quick scoring at billiards.
Instituted 10 years ago the snooker championship has been won with uninterrupted consistency by J. Davis, regarded generally as the greatest player of this interesting game in the world. Since the other preofessionals have given so much more attention to the game, the standard of play has improved all round, and, for that reason, it is conceivable that Davis's task will be a more severeone than ever before. The general expectation is that his most formidable rival again will be Lindrum, whom Davis beat in the final last year."

Sidney Smith v. Alec Brown (semi-final)

                            20 February [48235]
Frame 1: 44-57. Smith took yellow to brown but Brown cleared to black.
“There is every promise of this being one of the best matches of the season. It is a pity in a way that these matches are so short, but the season’s programme is too full to allow any extension of time. Neither player in the early part of the game showed very much concern about the defensive side of the game. For a time it was a pleasantly keen attacking match, with plenty of good strokes which showed that the eye was clear.”
Frame 2: 36-64. Brown’s highest break was 20 and he led 44-27 with two reds left. Smith took red-black-red but mist fairly easy pink.
Frame 3: 92-15. After an in-off by Brown, Smith made two 15s, 22 and 29.
Frame 4: 49-53. Smith started by going in-off but then made 20. Smith fouled the pink when snookered and Brown went in-off; Brown made 25 to final brown. Smith took blue and pink but Brown fluked black for frame.
                            Frame 5: 30-82. Brown made two 16s, 22 and 17. 1-4

Frame 11: 69-51. Smith made 24 and 13 to acquire a good lead. However, Smith went in-off the blue and Brown took yellow and green to diminish the lead. Smith, though, had the better of play on the colours.

Joe Davis v. Sidney Smith (final)

                            27 February [48241]

Frame 2: 64-52. Davis made 23 and Smith 17 and 16. In this latter break he took black and pink, but missed the black after the third red, from which Davis made 14 and 20 (yellow to pink).
Frame 3: 77-23. Davis’s defensive play left Smith few opportunities. Davis made 19, 15 and 12 in leading 64-7 on colours.
Frame 4: 66-59 (re-spotted black). Smith started by making 30 in leading 57-0 and, on the colours, 57-26. Smith took yellow but snookered himself and failed to escape. Davis gained from another snooker and cleared green to black to tie. Both missed half-chances on the re-spot but Smith eventually, attempting a delicate stroke, missed it altogether.

Frame 15: 79-14. Davis made two 13s and 17. He “perhaps, was a little lucky on several occasions in leaving the balls wretchedly for his opponent.”
Frame 16: 52-61. Smith made 18 and 12 and Davis replied with 24 and 19 and led 52-41 on colours. Smith potted yellow from a snooker, and added green; Davis missed a chance on the brown and Smith cleared to pink.
Frame 17: 35-89. Davis made 35 and Smith replied with 48 (six blacks). Smith then gained a foul, took last red-black and later yellow to pink.

Frame 26: 82-21. “...much thought, and some good snookering, on the part of each player.” Davis made 34.
Frame 27: 78-37. Davis made 24 and played safety such that Smith had no chances.
                            Frame 28: 76-52. Davis made 38 and Smith 36.
                            Frame 29: 44-86. Davis made 24 and Smith 49.

Evening: Frame 31: 50-60. Smith made 33 and Davis replied with 48 (six pinks, blue) to lead 50-40 on colours. Smith cleared yellow to pink.

                            2 March [48244]
Frame 37: 57-49. Davis made the highest break of 20, yet it was one of the best frames seen in the championship. After Davis’s early 20, he fouled when using the spider. He played an excellent shot in sending the cue-ball round the table with perfect strength for position on the next ball. Smith took yellow to brown, Davis took blue and, after Smith had gone in-off it, the pink from tight under the top cushion, and added black for frame.
Frame 38: 61-63. Davis made 43 and Smith 27. Davis made 16 and, from a snooker, played a superb massé shot. Davis led 61-34 on the green, but Smith took green, gained a snooker, took brown and blue and, after Davis played a bad shot on the pink, took pink and black for frame.
                            Frame 39: 80-42. Davis made 44 and 22.
Frame 40: 36-72. Smith made 37 and Davis, having taken the final yellow, trailed 36-50. Davis took green and attempted to get on the brown, which was an inch or so below a middle pocket. He hit it a touch too hard and pocketed the brown. Smith cleared to black.
Frame 41: 62-55 (re-spotted black). Davis made 31 and Smith 22 (to final blue) to lead by 1. From a snooker Smith added pink but Davis took black to tie the score. Smith missed a good chance on the re-spot and left Davis an easy pot.
                            Frame 42: 24-87. Smith made 44 and 19. 23-19
Evening: Frame 43: 65-60. Smith led 60-16 and Davis made 49 clearance.

Frame 50: 104-24. Davis had only four visits to the table.
Frame 51: 15-105. Davis broke off with a forcing stroke and, although he did not pot a red, he snookered Smith behind the green. Smith, however, played a delicate stroke with just enough strength to reach a red. Smith made 27 and 42 in leading 81-15 on the colours.
Frame 52: 59-71. Davis fluked the final blue but Smith took pink.

                            Frame 56: 33-71. Smith made 43.
Frame 57: 49-71. Davis made 30 to lead 49-43 but Smith cleared last red to pink with 28 for frame.
                            Frame 58: 111-7. Davis made 32, 24, 24 and 22 in successive visits.
                            Frames 59 and 60: not reported. 35-25
                            4 March [48246]
Frame 61: 47-46. Smith led 46-17 but Davis made 17 and later took pink and black for frame.
Frame 62: 66-40. Davis made 16 and 44. Davis thus achieved a winning lead at 37-25.

                              Nice work
You play a long slow deadweight red to a corner pocket. As it approaches the pocket, a kamikaze woodlouse crawls out from under the cushion and makes its way across the table, conflicting with the path of the red precisely at the point the red gets there. The red, needless to say, veers off course, and the future of the woodlouse is uncertain. - The Statman

Herbert Holt v. Con Stanbury (qualifying round)
Herbert Holt v. Walter Donaldson (last eight)

No record of either of these matches appears to have been made in The Times. A small article on 22 December 1939 [48495] confirms the result of the draw, and thus that the matches were due to take place. Further, on 29 February 1940 [48552], the report on the final day of the Joe Davis-Alec Brown match (see below), states that having won that match Davis will now meet Donaldson in the first semi-final.

Frame 13: 71-35. Brown fouled unusually: In hand, he dropped the cue-ball and it struck the yellow.
Frame 14: 53-57. Brown made 18 and Davis 21. Davis took final brown to lead 53-39. Brown took blue and an excellent pink along the side cushion, followed by black.
