  • Pre-1977 world rankings (theoretical)

    I thought I would replicate this here with the forthcoming demise of the BBC boards. I put this there some months ago:

    =====

    1970-75 Unofficial World rankings

    For the world championships in 1973 to 1975, where there were more than 16 entrants, I have used the same system as was used when the rankings were begun, i.e. 5 for winner, 4 for runner-up, 3 for semi-finalists, 2 for quarters and 1 for last 16.

    Because there were fewer than 16 entrants in 1970 and 1972, I’ve given 4 to the champion, 3 to r-up, 2 for semis and 1 for quarters.

    For 1971 I have given the 1 point for those who came 5th to 8th in the round robin.

    Before 1970 it is not worth bothering with since there were so few entrants.

    So I offer you here, theoretical lists for 1970-71 (based on 70 w/champs only), 1971-72 (based on 1970 and 1971 champs) and 1972-73 to 1975-76 (based on previous 3 champs).

    If players are on equal points, then I have used most recent champs performance to decide, then next previous. If they are inseparable by this method, I have considered losing margin (i.e. quarter-finalist losing 15–9 is higher than quarter-finalist losing 15–3).

    (This means that each player features in these rankings for a minimum of 5 years; in reality he may have resigned.)

    1970-71
    1 . . . . Ray Reardon
    2 . . . . John Pulman
    3 . . . . John Spencer

    Alex Higgins’s début rank of 4 may be elevated by the fact that this is the first year I have given the champion 5 points.
