  • Lignum Vitae

    Hello Guys,

So I just read today that Lignum vitae is considerably heavier and cheaper that ebony. Could it be an alternative for making cue butts? The natural weight would mean lesser or zero lead being added.

I think 'real' Lignum Vitae was harvested almost to extinction. There are some sub-species, but there are restrictions on international trade of the better quality ones. Police truncheons used to be made from Lignum Vitae, so there might be quite a few blood splattered examples available in the UK.

Ebony is black, cue butts are traditionally black so that's what most players want, but there are many species of wood that will suffice or are better. Problem is that many of these species are on the endangered list and or are difficult to work due to toxic dust or simply too bloody hard, like ekki or ipe. Ebony looks nice when finished and is easy to work, doesn't tear on the plane, glues well, rosewood is another that's easy to work. Some exotic looking timbers are a bit oily and therefore don't take to glueing very well but that can be overcome using the right steps.

Just bought a board of panga panga, a very dark and dense hardwood, click link for pic. The equivalent ebony board would have been two hundred quid, this one cost me twenty, no brainer

It's very dense so planing will be hard, will have to sharpen plane blades a couple of times when working it, but it's not an oily timber so will glue well, will look great when oiled and finished.

Great. Please share a few pics if possible once it's ready.
