  • Cue stroke using rest

Why is it that when players are using the rest they use such a bouncy stroke? The tip moves up and down all over the place but seems fine in the end. I would just figure that a direct forward and back motion would be better.

This helps get a feel for the shot and because of the placement of the elbow a backward forward motion would mean you would be more likely to cue across the ball actually with just a straight forward/backward motion because of the elbow being horizontal.
However they do actually go through straight on the final push through, the rest is all about timing.

Jimmy white is the best player with the rest I think and one whos technique is very good at this type of shot

Found this video though of some young chinese kid doing an excercise with the rest - quite interesting.

Depends on who you are watching...

All the top pros have a rather level, smooth stroke and they address the point on the cue ball where they want to hit when using the rest (just like when playing without it)... perhaps a few exaggerate a bit on their preliminary few waggles but that, as 1blonde mentioned, is a way to get a feel of the shot for some players... :snooker:
