  • Hi guys, new to snooker, question about standing and stance.

hi guys, I just started today on here, I'm sorry if you guys are bored of this question, probably you get it alot, but me after watching the world championships I got really excited about snooker and yesterday I actually went to play, I find myself and my stance is a little unique or different than other players, and friends kept telling me that my stance is wrong and I need to change it, and that there's a textbook in snooker which you should follow, some contact points that I have to make, and apparentely these contact points are so common when you see the proffisional play the game however I'm here to ask that do I really have to change how I stand in order to play right?

Here's how i stand to make this post short and I will try as hard as I can to explain it.

first I don't put the cue exactly under my chin where most players do, I find myself putting the cue to the right of my chin, exactly under my right-eye. I'm also right-handed, now is this wrong? I find myself seeing the ball more clearly, and aiming it really nicely that way, if I practice in this way, is this really wrong?

the other thing is how I stand, I actually bend both my knees, It's not like the snooker pro's where they have one bended and one straight, both of my knees are bended, also is this wrong?

Thats all what I do differently than other people, I'm quiet new, so let me know if what I do is wrong or should I change them, thanks.

p.s. I'm more comfortable that way, I tried to change, but I don't see balls if i put the cue under my chin, my aim is all wrong, also if I straighten my leg up, I feel like i'm not watching the ball or I have to make my neck uncomfortable to see the ball (If i straighten my legs)

The more you watch and read about snooker you'll find out that there's a stance which is regarded as "perfect" and then there's a stance which is comfortable for the individual. Many of the top players are not quite textbook perfect. There's loads of examples but just to mention two to give you an idea. John Parrott bends at the knees and was a world champion. If you watched Jamie Jones just recently you'll have seen his chin is to the side of the cue and he sights with his dominant eye. This is very common.

It would be best to see a coach who can actually see you in the flesh, to help you find the stance that works best for you in terms of stability, comfort, etc. Where are you located (roughly) someone may know of a good coach close to you.
      cheers

Thanks for the replies, I have seen Jamie jones, and I saw that he put the cue under his left eye, I do the same except to the right (right-eye) which makes the cue line outside of my body to the right.

About the coach, its a great idea actually, but I'm certain there's no coaches around me in my area, I live in the middle-east, I know that the best coaches are in europe, in my country there's barely snooker at all, Maybe a total of 3 snooker clubs in the whole country, thats why I'm seeking help online, thanks.

I am sure there must be a coach somewhere in the ME, have you asked at these three clubs if they know of anyone local that helps others with their game? Which ME country only has 3 snooker clubs?
As an option, check out the http://www.thesnookerforum.com/board...hing-Questions and have a read, it may take you some time though
          all the best
