Yep I couldn't understand how it was possible and then realised that in early years of the crucible top8 were seeded into the next round...

correct, in 1979 the top 8 got seeded into the second round in a field of 24. As Higgins wasnt seeded into the 2nd round and got to the final he won more frames than the winner, Cliff Thorburn
