Well done Monique. In fact, with a number as low as 57, it is likely that two reds fell into pockets at the same time, sounding like a straightforward red. But the crux is that I swa the scoreboard before and after it changed, and it changed to 57 not from 56 but from 55 (or possibly a lower figure). True, I may not know whether they were on the colours or if multiple reds had been potted – but whichever, a 147 would be impossible.

I came home from work eager to watch the snooker on the television. Unfortunately, when I turned the tv on, I found it was suffering from a recurring problem. The picture was blank apart from a strip a few inches high at the bottom of the screed – so I could at least see the scoreboard! And the sound was working fine. I just couldn’t see any of the table.

The first shot that took place when the tv had warmed up sounded like a player making a short-range pot; it must have been a red because the referee announced the score, "57", immediately. A second later, the scoreboard changed to 57–0.

Given all this, explain how I was certain that a 147 break was not a possibility.
OK let me try another scenario ... the assumption that a red was played (in bold) comes from the fact that if the ball needs to be respotted the ref annouces the break only after repsotting. However if the players are on the colours already ... so if the scoreboard was showing 55-0 (or less than 55) before you would know the players are on the colours and therefore a 147 is definitely not on ...
